Title: BUG - Syncing a Windows Mobile handheld under Vista
Post by: Rob L on June 01, 2007, 02:59:28 am
I've just upgraded my media PC to Vista.

It was syncing my Windows Mobile handheld fine under XP - the internal memory and the storage card in it were seen as separate devices, so I just told Media Center to sync onto the card.

However, under Vista, it's different. There's just ONE device, and the internal memory and Storage Card are seen at a level underneath (though oddly they both appear with the "free space" bars too, so they're not quite directories).

Media Center detects just one device now where it previously detected two. I didn't really expect this to be a problem, because I just specified the full path - e.g. Handheld\Storage Card\My Documents\My Music\[Album]

Unfortunately, though, this really doesn't work - Media Center just doesn't see it. It only seems to be seeing the internal memory - it says "space used: 41.8 MB of 58.9 MB", and the storage card is 2GB!

It's possible of course that I'm specifying the path wrong, but I don't know how to fix that - if there were browse buttons for the path, I'd be much more confident that I was specifying it correctly.

Has anyone else got this working?

Any ideas?

Can we add browse buttons into a newer build, so I can at least be sure I'm doing that bit right?

Thanks

What version of ActiveSync, and what version of WM on the device?

I ask because my WM5 PocketPC still shows up as two devices under Vista.

Are you really running ActiveSync under Vista???

I'm running Windows Mobile Device Center, not ActiveSync.

The device is WM6.

Sorted, it seems...

It turns out that there's a Microsoft update that's needed for this to work, kb931621.
It was released back in March, and is applied automatically from Windows Update
For some weird reason, it took Windows a few days to actually realise it needed it! I came home this evening, and it popped up saying there was an update available for Windows Media Player 11 that enabled the use of storage cards in Windows Mobile 5 devices!

Maybe it saw me posting on here :-)

Still would probably be useful if you could have a browse button for specifying the paths though.... :-)

Glad to hear it's sorted.

And of course you're right about the name of ActiveSync now.  I'm grumpy with both because they don't play nice with others. (Thunderbird, Eudora, Windows Address Book, etc.)

Looks like MS will push out the fixes for Windows Mobile sync and Vista mid June.
