For some reason the playlists will not play on the Archos 504. The same playlists played fine on my Archos AV480. Please help
-
Do you have the handheld settings set to tranfer using WMDM? If not, try ticking 'Use WMDM...' first. If that is ticked and it's still not working, turn it off and try changing the playlist format. If you still can't get them to work, create a playlist on the device, and send it to me (rick @ jriver dot com), let me know what folder it was in on the device and I will see what I can do.

Thanks you so much. When you say "ticking" I am on not sure what you mean. Also is WMDM the Windows Media Device setting on the Archos? How do I change the Playlist format? Is that done in MC or on the Archos?
Thank you

Tick means "check the box" -- [X] .
WMDM and MTP are more or less the same thing. They're both the Microsoft device management protocol. Is the Archos MTP compatible? Firmware up to date?
-
All the settings changes that I mentioned are to be done within MC. Sorry for the confusion.
-
The firmware is up to date, but I do not know if it is MTP capatable. How would I know?
-
Where exactly do I change the settings in MC? Option/Handheld?

Yes.

Check the Archos site. Read the notes on the firmware updates. Call Archos. Google search.
-
OK, I am looking in Options/handheld but do not see where to change to WMDM.
-
This is the only reference I see to MTP in the firmware history updates
"USB MTP (aka Windows mode) link more robust" and
"USB MTP (aka Windows mode) more robust with full speed host"

The Archos 504 can be set (from within settings on the Archos) to either MSC mode (shows up like a drive) or MTP mode. If it is set in MSC mode you have the option in MC to communicate with it using WMDM or simply as a removable drive. That option is in the Files & Paths section of the options for that device.
If you aren't transferring licensed content we suggest you set the device to MSC mode and turn off 'Use WMDM'. This will result in much faster transfers.
Regarding Playlists: If the Archos is in MTP mode or if it is in MSC mode but 'Use WMDM' is checked you won't be able to try different playlist formats.
Note: There have been known issues with the Archos in MTP mode, many of the firmware bug fixes have been to address these issues. We suggest that if you aren't transferring licensed content to use MSC mode until these issues are resolved.

As you can tell, I am not very technical so I am getting a little confused on naming. It would be helpful if new what the acronyms mean
MTP
MSC
WMDM
-
google or wikipedia might help.
-
Only found one
MTP = Media Transfer Protocal
WMDM = I believe this refers to "Windows Media Device Mode" in the Archo unit
The other connection mode is "In PC Hard Drive Mode. I that what "MSC" means?
-
Yes. MSC devices appear as removable drives in Windows.
- Device Classes -
MTP - Media Transfer Protocol
MSC - Mass Storage Class
UMS - USB Mass Storage (starting to show up)
- Communication Technologies -
WMDM - Windows Media Device Manager
WPD - Windows Portable Devices
WIA - Windows Image Acquisition
etc, etc.

So to get back my original issue, when I sync the Archos in the in PC Hard Drive Mode, the play lists do not play, so your recommendation is to use the WMDM setting on the Archos unit and see if that works.
-
I tried to Sync with the WMDM setting on the Archos and as far as I can tell only one play list worked. The very first on in the list on the archos. The others are empty.
Any thoughts? I will try other secenarios this evening.
-
We're not sure what that's all about. It sure isn't typical behavior of any other MTP device we are aware of. We'll try to get our hands on a 504 and do some testing.
-
Thanks. Over the weekend I tried all 3 scenarios to set up playlists and none of them have worked. Do you still want me to set up a playlist on the Archos unit and email it as suggested in an earlier reply?
How long might it take to get a 504 unit to trouble shoot? I am considering returning this unit if I cannot get the playlists to work.
-
I am checking in. Were you able to get a Archos 504 unit to test?
Thank you
