Title: iPod problem
Post by: goose2 on June 19, 2007, 10:15:06 am
I'm having a problem with my iPod that didn't exist in earlier versions of MC. Every time I try to read iPod files via MC, MC crashes ("must close message").
I've re-booted, re-detected, disabled plugins, initialized iPod and re-synched.....same result. Oddly enough, I can initialize or sync by right click on the tree and picking the appropriate menu item, but if I just left click on iPod in the device tree, MC goes down. Sequence of actions is like this: start up MC, plug in iPod, "can't identify Ipod" message appears (as always), click "OK", iPod appears in tree, click on iPod in tree, MC "must close" message. I've never had this problem with any previous versions of MC, and there have been no other changes to my system, so I assume it's a bug.

Something may be corrupt on the iPod.  You're probably going to have to reset the iPod and start over.

I'll move this to the portable device forum.

I have now completely re-set via apple updater, and then initialized via MC and the problem still remains......any other ideas?

Are you still getting this, even with no files on the device?

What build of MC are you using?

What is the model number of the iPod?
What is the firmware version on the iPod?
What are the last 3 digits of the serial number?

All of these can be found in Settings > About on your iPod.

Thanks

model # is A1019 (from back of case)
firmware version is 1.3 (from menu)
last 3 dig. of S/N are MMB (from menu)
2nd generation, 10g

Thanks for the prompt responses :)

This could be an OS/firewire/MC issue.

The model number you listed isn't really the model number of the iPod. It should be of the form M????LL and will be listed in Settings > About

We're testing a 3rd Gen using firewire now but in the meantime could you send me a log of MC attempting to identify your iPod?

To turn on logging, go to the Help menu and click Logging. Tick log to a file and tick only the handheld events. Click Ok to exit the logging dialog. Now go to Tools > Options > Handhelds and run "Redetect all devices". After this has a minute to process, go back to the logging dialog and email me (rick at jriver dot com) the log file.

Thanks

Log sent, thanks Rick

I don't know what to say about the model number. There is no model # listed on the "about" menu on iPod, only the info I posted.  On the back of the case it says: Model No.: A1019

The log file looks fine. According to the Apple website the latest firmware version for the 2nd Gen is version 1.5. Please update the firmware and retest.

I've installed 1.5 and nothing has changed.

Turn logging of all events on and send me the log of MC crashing. (You will have to go back into MC after the crash to email the log file.)

Rick...I have just emailed the log to you. Interesting fact, maybe relevant: Last night I was able to load files on the iPod, 7-8 gigs, by using the right click on file>send to>iPod, and then clicking "transfer" in the action window. Everything transferred properly and iPod plays the files normally, but I still get an immediate "MC must close" if I try to look at the files on the iPod in MC. Also, right click on "explore" in iPod in drives and devices brings up windows explorer and displays iPod files properly.
Thanks for your help......

Thanks for the additional info. That's consistent with what the log file is showing.
