I've reinstalled an unlicensed MC12 several times now (I just haven't restored my license yet). When I try to use the ripper and open its Options window, an error is immediately generated and MC12 crashes. Interestingly, my other ripper (ACXtractor) also crashes.
Historically, I just migrated from W2K Pro to XP Pro SP2 a couple of days ago, after flashing the mobo BIOS. After MC12 repeatedly crashed last night, today I flashed the BIOS of the Plextor PX-716A thinking that might be the problem. The Plextor has not given my any trouble in the past.
There is an aborted installation of WMP 10 onboard, in that my XP Pro isn't yet validated (I won't have the second authenticated copy for a few days). Could it possibly be something having to do with MS DRM code?
What do you suggest next as a troubleshooting step?
Thanks

Try setting your encoding to a different type. WAV, WMA, or APE, for example.

I'm seeing the same thing, but not involving the ripper. Boot, tools/options, wait about 3 secs - crash.
Win XP Pro, SP2 (cleanly installed last night, with full MS security patches installed, and not much else on the machine yet).
I'm can attach the crash info from the MS error report dialog, if that would be useful.

From Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, I rolled back Windows Media Format to a prior version, then rebooted. Reinstalled my other ripper and now that works. Will reinstall MC12 in a bit and see if that was the solution, reporting back what I find.

Problem persists.

What format are you ripping to? Try APE as a test.
