Shouldn't MC12 play flv files? I have downloaded several from uTube but when I try to play them nothing happens. Additionally when I try to import the files I have downloaded they will not import and will be added to my library. I have chosen flv as one of the file types in MC. I have done a search in this forum that has not provided me with a whole lot of answers. Anyone have any suggestions?

Make sure your version of Flash is up to date and then try playing them in the flashplayer.
-
My flash is up to date, but still no luck.
Do you mean play the file in the flashplayer outside MC? If so, how do I do that? I can only get the flashplayer to play flash video off of websites.

Make sure your version of MC is up to date. Copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.
Then, in MC, open Video in the tree, then Web Media, then Youtube. Do they play there? That's how it should work.

I can play the videos that I have not downloaded that are still on the youtube site, but the videos .flv fiels that I have saved cannot be played. My understanding is you should be able to save and play the .flv files offline. Is that not the case?
-
You're correct. FLV files that have been downloaded with MC12 should play in MC12.
Edit: It looks like we've broken it. We'll fix it next week.
-
Jim,
Is there any update on a fix for this?
-
Not yet. Sorry.
-
No sweat. I assume then that it is not just me having this problem?
-
This is a bit strange, as you can play files directly from YouTube, but can not play a local file.
What happens if you try directly play the local file? Any error messages?
Try finding an flv file in Windows Explorer, and right-click it, and select Media Center -> Import. What happens?
Can you email me a log file? My address is yaobing at jriver dot com

Hi Pilot,
Just another idea. Check to see if MC imported your flv files as "data" files. On the left pane, where you normally find "Audio", "Image", and "Video", you would also find "Documents". Browse it and see if you can find your flv files. If you find them there, change the Media Type from "Data" to "Video", and then try to play them.

That was it, MC was importing the files as data files. However, I don't know why. I was importing them by using the Tools-> Import Folder... and then selcting the folder to import from. When I went to the folder and right clicked and selected import like you suggested it imported correctly.
Also, my log files were empty. Does that tell you anything?
Thanks for your help!

More important question is: Do they play correctly now?
One possible explanation is that you imported them before MC downloaded needed filters. Now you should be able to import and play them.
You need to turn on logging before you can get log files that are not empty.
-
Yes, they do play correctly now. Thank you for your help.

Yaobing,
I have followed the your FAQ flv instructions and still can't get flv files to play. They show up under video, but won't thumbnail and simply don't play. I have also tried deleting and re-importing them.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Those were the same syptoms I was having. When I imported by selecting the files, right clicking and selecting import through the Media Center selection it worked. Sounds like there may be minor bug...

Ok Now I am seeing the specific issue.
If I add the flv files to Playing Now, they just Play. ;D
However if I play them from the default Video View scheme by either double clicking them or hitting the 'play' thumbnail option they do not in fact play.
It looks like the only way I can get the files over to the playing now queue is by manually dragging them, I can't even do a right click Add to playing now.'

That is odd. You can play it in one way but not in another way?
I have seen a case in which it just would not play on Vista, no matter what.
When it plays, is it playing in DirectShow?
Do you get the "Downloading needed components, please wait..." message (either on display window, or on the "current file" info window)?

It plays ffdshow audio and video, but as I said only when the files exist in playing now, and the only way to get them to move to playing now is by dragging them. I cannot play them from windows explorer eventhough they are set as default to play in MC, which means it is probably some Vista system level specific setting causing the issue.
I do not get any messages in any scenario either.

You log file shows that you tried to launch a file externally three times unsuccessfully. After that a success play (possibly from Playing Now?).
Do you have the same difficulty playing other video types (not just flv)?
It could be that your external command launcher is mixed up with an older version. Try reinstalling MC, and reboot.
-
There is 2 ways you can play FLV from YouTube files simply download TubeHunter Ultra or use firefox w/ extention.
TubeHunter will actually convert the FLV file to any format you wish.

I uninstalled except for removing registry entries, re-installed, rebooted and the same issue is there. I can't imagine removing the registry entries would help?
Thanks

Ok so I just hit import files again, which I had done a few times before, and everything is working perfect now, so the re-install did it!

Great! Glad to hear that.

Why not try TubeHunter Ultra that will solve all the problems.
