Title: Any idea when MC12 will support Blu Ray?
Post by: jmone on August 08, 2007, 04:49:54 am
Sorry for the double post but I've no answer in the main MC12 board.

I'm building a new HTPC and if MC12 will in the "near" future support Blue Ray I will add the drive now.....

Thanks
Nathan

I think they are in a wait and see mode on what format will fail

Sony does not have a good tract record in breaking ground on new formats.

besides Matt already made a comment for JRiver

It's an area we have our eyes on, but it's a little ways out for all of the reasons mentioned in this thread.

We want to do it. Right now I just have too many things to do. When I get my acts together, the first thing I need to do is to buy a drive. I have no idea which one I will try first - probably a toss-up for me  ;)

What about HD-DVD?

Should be easy. Check what format Lord of the Rings Trilogy EE comes in and get it! ;)

LOTR is a Warner Brothers movie and, while they were initially in the HD-DVD camp, they are now releasing their movies in both formats.  So... That shouldn't matter.  When it eventually comes out (what are they waiting for?) it'll very likely be on both formats.

For PC HD-DVD drives... The XBOX 360 HD-DVD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103051) drive works perfectly and is a good value.

I am also waiting patiently for MC12 to support Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. My *personal* view on the format war is that none of the format is going to win or die. Both formats are going to survive and we will have multi-format drives/players ubiquitously (similar to DVD+RW and DVD-RW). So, I seriously hope that J River does not decide to wait until a format is declared a winner.

Thanks,
Osho

Or maybe we'll get what's behind door number three: They'll both die in a few years, when everybody has an Internet connection that's fast enough to stream HD movies.

I don't think terabytes compete well with Blu Ray and HD DVD as well as they do against DVDs.

If I do build a nice HTPC, I would like to add a Blu-Ray drive but the costs still seem out of sight.  I know a few people who have purchased 2 or more Blu-Ray players each so I figure that we, here, should decide on one format and all stick to it.  If we all pick a format and tell everyone we know then maybe we'll have influence on declaring Blu-Ray the winner.  I like Blu-Ray better because of the name, higher storage capacity, and that it is more innovative with the blue laser...helping to lower the costs of blue lasers for purchase.

Obviously, with a HTPC, there are some requirements:

Music (pretty easy)
Pictures (even easier)
DVDs & Random Video Clips (Fine but SD only!)
High Definition formats!  We all want em!  We personally don't really have a big HD setup...we have smaller ones but nothing big enough to enjoy HD video on.  However, more HD content through high bitrate channels like discs would be helpful in thrusting us to buy a 1080p projector...$4K or so.
