I find myself deleting the songs played in playing now, especially when using MC as a discjockey.
I would be nice if songs that are played are automatically removed.
I wonder if more people would like this feature???
Please let me know!
-
Either this or the ability to shuffle only the un-played songs (from current to the bottom of the list) would have my enthusiastic vote.

Count me in too.

As an switchable option, I would certainly use this feature >90% of the time
-
I personally see 2 options:
- Would like to delete the songs played in playing now automatically (yes/no)
- would you like to shuffle the songs not yet played (yes/no)
One question comes up: how would you like the shuffle?
- After every song???
- After eery 10 songs
- On request! (as a button)

No, I'd like the shuffle to happen only on demand, not automatically.
-
I don't know if the shuffle option you're talking bout is the one I'm interested in so I clarify what I need:
I'd call this button I'd like the [ShuffleThis] button (but that's only 'cause English is not my mother tongue so I can't think of a better name 8)...)
Scenario: The Playing Now playlist is somewhat populated and Shuffle is off
- I press the [ShuffleThis] button and ALL songs in the playlist get "physically" shuffled
- I then start playing the playlist (Shuffle is still off) and it will be played in this randomly created order (note: what you see as next song in the list will be actually played next)
- after X songs has been played, if I press the [ShuffleThis] button again, only the remaining not-yet played songs are "physically" shuffled and, given that Shuffle is still off, the remaining part of the playlist will be played in this new order
I've written all this, but, come to think of it, I have no idea: maybe MC is able already to "physically" shuffle lists, maybe always shuffling ALL songs (including the already played ones); does anyone know?
-

Yep, turning shuffle on shuffles whatever is currently in Playing Now. However, that includes anything that's already been played :(
Perhaps MC could just shuffle everything AFTER the currently playing track?

Yep, I know you can turn shuffle on and it shuffles ALL songs, but I'd like them to be "physically" shuffled so that I can see the order in which is going to play all of them BEFORE it plays them.
I also noticed that the same song can be played more than once while some songs have not been played at all yet, but if it would "physically" shuffle and then would play sequentially you' would never get that behavior anyway.

This is exactly what I'm taking about. It's a pain that when I want to re-shuffle the list because I've added some more songs or for whatever reason, I always have to delete first the already played songs to avoid them to be reshufled with the others, when I don't want to listen to them again int this current session.

I think I catch your drift - did you know if you set up a playlist you can set Sort By to [Random]? That would shuffle everything in the playlist, but also show you the sequence before sending it to Playing Now. For that to work shuffle would have to be turned off.
PS: Sorry I think this post has drifted off-topic

I think we are still talking about the following options being requested:
- Remove the songs played in Playing Now automatically (yes/no)
- Button to shuffle the songs not yet played.
-
I would love to see a "shuffle now" button added to the toolbar button collection with the option to shuffle all or shuffle remainder of playlist. (It's really annoying to have to chase down Shuffle in the right click menu as it scrolls up and down).
An option in Playback Tools to remove previously played songs from the list would also be good.

Well, that good to know thanks, but it's not very handy 'cause you have to edit the playlist to turn it on or off and you have to resend the playlist to Playing Now to have the new order applied there.

Totally agree with this. An alternative would be to have an autoresume feature for playlists, much like the one we have for videos at the moment (Notwithstanding the fact that the video one irritates me to heck), so that when a playlist is re-loaded after MC has been shut down etc. it resumes from where it left off.

I definitely think we have support for asking these features.
Maybe someone from the development team could share his thoughts about this?
-
has anything happened on this front? The add (Shuffle All) option is great, but shuffling already played songs back into the mix makes it unusable in most circumstances.
-
This thread has been 'silent' for a long time.
As far as I know the requested option for deleting songs in playing now after they played is not available.
I hope I am wrong.
-
I hope it catches on this time around

Ctrl+R reshuffles Playing Now.
"Add (shuffled)" is in the Send To menu whenever you pick files.

"Ctrl+R" reshuffles everything, including songs in the playlist that have already been played. For example, if you are currently on song 15 in the playlist, it moves the currently playing song to #1 and reshuffles all the other songs, including the previous 14 songs that have already been played. Not useful if are in a party environment where people are constantly adding songs to the playlist.
"Add (shuffled)" only shuffles the songs that are being added at that particular time. If you are adding a single song to a playlist in a party environment, it doesn't do anything. If you are adding an entire album to a playlist, it just adds the album to the end of the current playlist in random order.
MC could really use a way to handle a constantly expanding playlist in a less linear fashion.

Personally I think the CTRL-R should refresh Playing Now based on the Audio view scheme. In my setup I have my view scheme pointing to a smartlist which generates the Playing Now tracks. If I hit the media button on my diNovo keyboard it tells MC to replace the current playlist with a completely new one based on my Audio view scheme's smartlist. So one key gives a completely fresh list of tracks. CTRL-R could (should) do the same, IMO, rather than just shuffling the existing playlist.

That is exactly what we are looking for!!!
Matt,
Ctrl+R does not do this trick i am afraid.

I've written a script to shuffle songs into the remaining playing now (it adds songs and then shuffles everything below the currently playing song):
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=33020.0 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=33020.0)
Requires Mr Chriz' scripting plugin:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38693.0 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38693.0)
It does the trick, but does require you to write a search line that will get the files you want, and an Add (shuffle remaining) option would be a lot better!

Thnx for your solution, but I would like to stick to standard MC.

I agree, 'Add (shuffle remaining)' is really the way to go. In theater view, it would act very much like a bar room jukebox, which is the type of experience I'm trying to reproduce.

This is a little different from what I am looking for. Nevertheless it would use it in some cases.
I am looking for 'delete songs from playing now when played'.

We'll add exactly this to a coming build.
Thanks.
Build 415:
NEW: Added new command "Reshuffle Remaining" the shuffles files after the current file in Playing Now.
Changed: Ctrl+Shift+R does "Reshuffle Remaining" instead of toggling the shuffle mode.
NEW: Added command Send To > Play > Add (shuffle remaining).
-
Matt,
any chance my option ('delete songs from playing now when played') will make in into MC?

We're less sold on this idea. Can you help convince us why it's a winner?
-
Sure.
On moments that Playing Now is actively used this is handy.
I think about party mode or diskjockey situations.
I am always looking on what songs are coming and find myself deleting the songs already played.
Using this option you always now that the song that is currently playing is nr 1 in the sequence. This helps if you want to reposition songs manually: move nr 5 to nr 2 (=next to play).
If you review this thread you will find more people that like this feature.
Everybody that sees advantages to this 'Automatically delete songs from Playing Now (when played)'-option say 'Yeah'.

Thank YOU. One of my favorite programs keeps getting better.

As a hard gigging DJ, I would find this feature very very useful. Fighting off drunken patrons (as diplomatically as possible), watching the gear, working out the crowd......things happen very fast.
This feature would certainly make the Playing Now interface a LOT more idiot proof.
I run MC on a laptop into an Edirol UA25, then into either a Yamaha EMX512 mixer/amp (smaller gigs) to Yamaha S115V speakers OR (for larger gigs) to a Phonic MX300 DJ mixer to active crossover, 31 band graphic, Yamaha P7000 and P2500 power amps to the S115V's and SW118V sub. I bridge the 2500 power amp to the SW118V.
I also have an Allen & Heath PA12 mixer for larger "variety concert" type gigs where a lot more than pure DJ is required (multiple mics, backing tracks, etc)
It all sounds exceedingly tasty......
Now, back to the topic.....
How's about it then?
-
Roger,
the shuffle remaing will be build in.
For now the 'delete song from playing now after played' has not enough support.
If the last one is what you are looking for also, please write down why it is so important for you.
I have not (yet) been able to convince Matt to make the effort to build this function.
-
Hi Peter,
My request referred to the Topic heading. I would not really be interested in the shuffle function......the playlist sequence I set up is the one I want :).
The manual clearing of previously played in Playing Now is an absolute chore. Over the course of an evening, in the "heat of battle", so to speak, one forgets to keep clearing tracks. The Playing Now view then gets so congested that mistakes are easily made (bearing in mind the festive nature of the DJ, appropriately lubricated ;), etc.)
This would be an extremely useful feature for DJ'ing.
Cheers, let's hope for the best.

I agree 100%.
Are there more people out there looking for this feature???
Please post your vote!!
We need to convince JRiver to build this into MC.
-
I know I tend to be a bit of a serial +1 voter, but anything that can be set as an option, and I will personally get use out of gets a vote from me, so...
+1
(and I cant envisage this being too hard to implement)
-
You got my vote.
I definately like the idea of a function that auto deletes songs from Playing Now (when played). The lack of this function is why I use another application in part situations.

Please make this happen!

If you've ever done the party thing you'd appreciate it usefulness.
I'm all for it

Any objections to this option disengaging as soon as you stop playback?
The option would be a lot less scary if we can do it that way -- otherwise it'll get turned on and confuse people a week later.

Matt,
I understand what you are saying, but that would be a unjustifiable workaround. I understand what you mean by the way. Maybe there should be some kind of indication to show that this option is active explicitly. Suggestion: indicate that the song currently playing will be delete as soon as it ends, by color and addiotional text.
-
Just a fly in the ointment but if this feature were added I'd like to see this as a setting that is set and therefore can be disabled, or a toggle like the other toggles on the controls (shuffle, continuous etc) and i'd like to see an option in the settings to set when the deletion takes place.
Now I'll explain this last piece
I often hear a track while doing something else I can't for some reason leave... and I can't remember the track details, I like to go back and look at what it was, but if deletion was turned on, it would be gone... so how about the option that it deletes it only once x further tracks had been played (x being configurable).
If that's not clear - and it probably isn't - what has been played only gets deleted when a further 10 tracks have been played, so you can always see what has recently played, what is playing and what is going to play.
Rich

I will support Matt's suggestion as an acceptable, but less preferred solution - but it's definitely better than nothing. I can understand the reasoning behind this suggestion.
I do like the idea of a toggle system, akin to the shuffle toggle already present, as well as the "deletetion after x tracks" suggestion ("Deferred deletion" ? )
-

I think the best you can get here is an option buried in the options dialog with default (OFF).
Having some kind of visual indication would mean a GUI modification as well ie a harder sell.
Wondering instead if an automatic scroll might work so that the currently playing track is *always* at the top of the list, all the time. It gives the illusion that the tracklist is deleting itself but not really, for those that want to check back on what was playing.
I can certainly see the use for DJs as they don't care to know what was already played, they are usually occupied with what to play next :D
-
I would rather have the setting not disengage.
Delete after playing is something that I would probably use 99% of the time.
If I cared about being able to reset my playing now play list to something I already heard chances are that it is a playlist that I can reload and reset that way.
-
+1 for non-auto disengagement.
I would suggest that this feature would have to be selectable (preferably in options). There are certainly times when it wouldn't be appropriate/desirable for the Playing Now list to be cleared.

I agree. Where the option is set does not matter much to me. I prefer in the view, near shuffleplay etc.
