Title: default media player
Post by: richard.e.morton on August 30, 2007, 05:44:16 am
Hi,

How do you make MC the default media player. I have a keyboard with a media program start on it, but it opens the detault in access&defaults. I can't get MC in there... I've looked at hacking the registry, but nothing on MSDN seems to cover it (or coverit simply at least)...

has anyone managed to get MC in access and defaults?

(btw - I deselect all file types during the install as I use MC for my library, not for odd files I wish to play - I work with audio files all day which I need to edit, so music in jrmc, other audio in soundforge or similar)

Have you installed the keyboard driver?

My MS keyboard has configurable special keys.

"Windows Control Panel > Keyboard" opens this configuration window:

humm.. ok, but the keyboard doesn't need a driver it just automagically uses the Windows default media player already from access and defaults, I just want to make it MC in there, then the button would work...

any ideas how to do this

I see.

As you said, it looks like JRiver Media Center is not included in the list of media players in "Set Program Access and Defaults".

If I have understood correctly, the included media players are in this registry branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Media

I suppose JRiver could (should?) easily add MC there.

Here's more information about SPAD:

I think you can also configure the Multimedia keys using TweakUI XP...

Here is how MC should show up in SPAD:

Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults > Custom

EDIT: This is a feature request.

Hi There,

Are you indicating that is does show up on your computer? Did youput it there or the standard installer?

Thanks

Let's just say that it is a mockup and suggestion for JRiver.

I actually experimented with the registry keys for a little while and got it partially working, but I didn't try do to make it complete including a working uninstall part. I already reverted the changes.

Here is another MSDN article about adding programs to SPAD:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/platform/Shell/programmersguide/shell_adv/setprogramaccess.asp

Personally I have no use for the feature, but I hate to see only the other media players in SPAD.
