Could you send a JPEG with GPS EXIF information embedded to jimn at jriver dot com?

Also include a link to this post.  Hopefully that's all it will take for us to add it.

Thanks.

Is this for some kind of sensing pics ?

..trying to figure out why having lat & longtitude is important in a photo.

Presumably, some new digital cameras, and cell phones with cameras, have built-in GPS units that automatically record the location the picture was taken in the EXIF metadata, in addition, there are EXIF editors where you can enter the location manually.

The reason? One popular use is to link them to Google Earth, so that people can see pictures of places all over the globe. It also beats trying to remember just where you took that 10 year old photo.

Thanks for adding the capability. As always, your responsiveness to user requests is fabulous...

As for reasons, The Economist has a introductory article about the emerging "Geoweb" in the Sept 8th issue: http://www.economist.com/science/tq/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9719045.  "As the internet becomes intertwined with the real world, the resulting geoweb has many uses..."

PS: Now that the geotags are in MC, an obvious next step would be to add the ability to export to GML and KML.
