Ok, the story goes on.
I was happy that I corrected a problem with the poor video quality. I had to set some option to "use windows media acceleration.." or something like that in order to get good video. Don't know of any other way to get things looking better unless someone else does.
Anyway, when I set the system to use the above setting I no longer have volume control. I can change the main system volume, through the volume icon in the system tray, but then everything gets lowered.
Is there any way to get good video quality in Media Center and have the volume function normally?

Try switching MC volume control in options betweend DirectSound and Wave Out.

I tried that and many other settings in the filters section. Nothing seems to work. I even tried uninstalling MC completely and reinstalling the most recent version.
Currently, if I want good video then I use WM acceleration but lose volume control. If I want volume control then I get, what can only be described as, YouTube-ish quality video. I will still get JRiver Media Center but not until this problem is resolved. Ultil then, I will switch back to WMP 11.
P.S. - I am currently using Vista Ultimate x64.
