Title: Ipod Loses Coverart
Post by: edbro on October 16, 2007, 10:55:14 am
Twice now, after doing a sync with MC, my iPod will "lose" all of its coverart. Actually, all my coverart is embedded in the files so I know they are there. But, the iPod will act as if there are no thumbnails. I don't get the standard MC logo, I get a grey square with the double music note in it. I don't know if the database is getting messed up during the sync but it has happened twice now.

Is there  a way to rebuild the art on the device instead of resetting it and reloading the entire library?

There are some iPod fixes on the way that may help.

Quote
12.0.340 (10/04/07)

7. Changed: Added artwork for podcasts and videos to iPod transfers.
8. Changed: Removed default MC artwork for missing album art in iPod transfers.

Should be available in a few days.

Also take a look at the ilounge forums.  Here's a sample of what you can find:

Thanks, I'll look forward to .340.

I did notice from the link you sent me that iPod shouldn't mess with the database if the art is stored in the files:
Quote
When adding album artwork DIRECTLY to tracks (on iPod or in iTunes):

    * Artwork is embedded in the ID3 tags of the AAC/MP3 files.
    * The local album artwork cache is updated.
    * The iPod artwork database is NOT updated.

Having said that, I remember that I did fire up iTunes the other day to tag some audiobooks. iTunes has a special tag for audiobooks that causes them to be bookmarked. I wish MC could incorporate that so I could ditch iTunes all together. In any case, maybe iTunes messed something up when I transferred the audiobook.

Which forum are you referring to -- do you specifically mean the "itunes" forum at the iPod lounge (i.e. the specific forum referenced above), or one of the other forums at iPod lounge, or...?

Thanks,

Larry

Title: MC and iTunes incompatible
Post by: edbro on October 20, 2007, 11:02:55 am
Is there some database incompatibility between iTunes and MC? I use MC to transfer music to my iPod but I have to use iTunes to transfer video seeing as I can not get video to transfer with MC. But, whenever I use iTunes to transfer a video, all my coverart gets lost on the iPod and I have to delete and retransfer all my audio. This is a huge pain.

For me at least, it seems you have to use either MC exclusively or iTunes exclusively. Unfortunately, I can't get video to the iPod from MC just yet. I know that is coming but it still begs the question; are the two programs incompatible?

What you're describing doesn't sound like an incompatibility between iTunes and MC per se -- it sounds like an incompatibility between iTunes "syncs" and MC "syncs."  I'm not certain, but I think that you need to use one or the other to sync, i.e. I don't think you can sync with one then sync with the other without clearing the iPod first.

You should be able to.  If you can't, that's a new problem.

There were some purely apple cover art problems recently -- try the software boards on the ilounge forum.

I stand corrected -- thanks for the information.

edbro,

It looks like there is still a problem with album art when performing sync's with MC and iTunes simultaneously - we're looking into it.

Thanks, you are indeed a swell guy!

Actually, if I could get video to work properly I wouldn't need iTunes at all.

Are the videos protected AAC?

No. I've tried a couple of home movies in wmv format as well as an unprotected Divx (avi) full length movie. I converted one unprotected file to mp4 with another utility and tried to transfer it with MC. MC failed on that one also (it was trying to convert the already converted file).

Okay, I've been trying to blame iTunes for my coverart problems. But, tonight I tried to transfer one cd and one video to my iPod from MC and now all my coverart is gone again. The iPod was good before I synched with MC and it hasn't been near iTunes in a while. I've had to delete and reload all my music quite a few times now. If there is a fix in the works, I wish you'd get it out soon as this is getting to be quite a pain.

P.S. Not only did I lose all my coverart but the video failed again. This time it appeared to go okay but it is not viewable on the iPod. It gives the green screen and does not play.

Can anybody at JR comment on whether these are bugs or just peculiar to my system? Are there fixes coming? I've been holding off synching my iPod because I'm afraid to do it with MC anymore and adding iTunes into the mix causes more incompatibility problems. I keep losing coverart and videos don't work at all with MC.

This has been fixed in build 12.0.362.
