Title: Directshow and Audio

I am struggling with getting m4a files transcoded to mp3 for playback on my phone (the phone plays m4a but doesn't support tags or coverart). I can't get MC to transcode to mp3, it essentially says it can't

oggs transcode fine. I notice that the Player->Playback Options -> Playback Options -> Video -> Directshow Playback settings... is listed under "video" in the tree I just described, however I have seen some posts indicating that this also affects audio only playback, is this true?

If it is true I assume it also affects transcoding?

I have CCCP, Apple Quicktime, and Xvid installed (in that order), and although playback of m4a files is fine within MC, as I said transcoding fails.

ideas?

You may not have installed the directshow filters for decoding the type of file you are trying to play.
Please install appropriate filters and try again.

I should have said I have searched this forum, without luck.

Also if splitters are there to split audio and video components of a file to appropriate codecs, are they required for audio only file?

As you already discovered, the option is under "Video", but it covers all DirectShow playback, including m4a. The default setting is to try playing m4a in DirectShow. So you must make sure you have DirectShow filters that can handle them. Installing CCCP is a way to go.

You should add this. It could be a new menu item in the playback menu. It would open a filter list and make possible to access the filter specific configuration panels.

My other priorities prevented me from giving it more thoughts as only a few audio types are played in DirectShow. Technically there is the question of where to put the menu. Unlike video, where the Display Window is the natural place, for audio I can think of the display window, or the main application menu, neither seem perfect.

Post by: glynor on October 18, 2007, 10:26:49 am: I'd just do the display window, and keep it consistent with Video. I too would occasionally use this, particularly when diagnosing M4A playback issues.
