Title: FAILED TO CONNECT TO SERVER
Post by: Robert on August 14, 2002, 07:37:30 am
I am continously getting an error message MJReader 'Failed to connect to server' when attemting to Check For Update, or download encoders or other plug-ins.

All other internet connections appear to be working normally (Outlook email, IE6, and CDDB access using Media Jukebox, other software packages that update themselves).

Is the musicex server down??

The server is fine.

Do you use a proxy server or a firewall?

Upon searching for 'failed to connect' on your message board, and reading through the numerous complaints of this nature, I once again checked my proxy server settings in IE6 Options, and found the problem.

The code that your installation replaces obviously rewrites the proxy settings as well, but adds on 'http:\' preceding the original server settings.  The implications of this are obvious (prevents the use of protocols other than http).

Considering I only bought Media Jukebox tonight, and provided a pointer towards fixing a problem that has apparently been ongoing at least since December last year (I have fairly extensive experience in this field), I don't suppose some consideration could be awarded by means of a refund of part of the purchase price for Media Jukebox Plus (approx $50 Aus!!)

Robert,

You are not quite correct. MJ uses the proxy settings of IE - it never changes them itself. On the proxy setting screen, I have seen instances of "http://foo.bar.com/" for the "proxy address to use", but this is a URL not an address (a FQDN or an IP address to be specific). Internet Explorer works "by luck" with these weird addresses.

Robert,

With all due respect, it is just not possible that a company like JRiver, with their fanatic attention to bug fixing, and small army of beta testers, could have such a simplistic core bug.  You must be mistaken.

JRiver???

Thanks, naomi.  You're correct.  Gateley's reply on behalf of JRiver was very considerate.

Robert,
Glad you found the problem.
