Title: Weird speed problem, solved! BAD USB hub.
Post by: bob on November 12, 2007, 11:32:04 am
Sometime last week my 2K dev box (which in the past has been REAL stable) went into slow-motion mode. I suspected a virus or spyware. No such "luck", whew. I powered the machine down and up again, no change. CPU usage was around 85-99% with no process showing up in the process table reflecting this. I started pulling off hardware and found the problem. It was my fairly expensive compaq usb/firewire hub! Powercycling it caused the problem to go away. Weird because I only had a mouse and keyboard hooked up to the hub and they both were working!

But they were not passing much data.

I had a similar problem, but it was caused by a bad firewire\usb external drive, That caused havoc with my other drives.
