Title: trying to get rid of skips

My settings on my compaq presario 1998 are:
between tracks, cross fade aggressive
seeking, smooth fast
stop, fadeout fast
mode, waveout 16 bit
wave mapper, more skip resistance
large buffer, speed 1x
windows media encoder
quality 48
             It still skips. Please help.

It's Robert again. Just adding to this, I heard windows media skips.
How would I get another encoder and what would be the steps to doing
this. Would this solve the problem?
