I'd guess those AVI files have the value "Audio" in the Media Type field.

oh - I thought that MC makes this decision based on file extension only ... I'll have to check - thx

If you don't have decoders installed for the video portion of the AVI, MC will not be able to see the video.  It may still be able to play the audio, hence the behavior you're seeing.
