No idea, sorry. Try a google search for possible information.
AVI is a container, so the format within it is important.

The DirectShow filter DirectVobSub (aka VSFilter) can handle this for you. The best bet is to use CCCP, which includes and activates DirectVobSub all on it's own. If you want, you could also install it yourself: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84359
VSFilter can handle all of those subtitle formats, and works just fine with MC. The subs can be either embedded, sidecar, or located in a specific directory (which you indicate in the VSFilter options).
I'd suggest you take some time and read through the DirectShow Playback Guide (the link is in my signature).

Just one more reason why I decided to just go with standard DVD folders (VIDEO_TS) because it is the one format where you inherently get subtitles, menus, multiple audio tracks, etc. Sort of the easiest way to go but not the best on space savings.

CCCP is absolutely amazing. It replaces so many other programs that bloat your computer all in one.
