MJ 8.346 & W2k
In DSP Studio: Does Replay Gain work on all formats? I just tested some Ogg's using VorbisGain (latest version) thru WinVorbis and didn't notice any change. The CD is Berlin - Pleasure Victim which has tracks that peak at 45% (according to EAC) which is low. I did set VorbisGain to Audiophile instead of Radio which may have dampened the gain. I left all settings in DSP @ 0 db since Replay Gain looks in the file for gain adjustment.
Thanks - Xenno

If you analyze the replay gain of a file in MJ and then play it, Replay Gain will work in DSP Studio. I don't know what VorbisGain is... you need to analyze the file with MJ.
Are you analyzing in MJ?

"...you need to analyze the file with MJ."
So, you're saying that the Replay Gain DSP only recognizes the gain info that is created by analyzing files with MJ?

I haven't tried that, but I thought MJ's replay gain worked like VorbisGain, MP3Gain, & the new WaveGain, in that it saves the peak amplitude value (and others) in the file (as a Tag?) so that it will know how much to ramp up the gain on replay.

It looks like a case of "No Standards" is in effect - two programs doing the same thing in differents ways.
MJ adds this to the file for ogg ReplayGain:
MJMETADATA=
Whereas VorbisGain (using Speek's Oggifier front end) adds this:
REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_PEAK=1.17534280
REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN=-2.85 dB
Winamp will read and use the latter, but not the former.
Vice versa for MJ.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all play the same game by the same rules? Is there a standardized method for using ReplayGain with ogg files?

Matt, here are links to the files that you should know about:
Garf's VorbisGain
http://sjeng.sourceforge.net/ftp/vorbis/vorbisgain-0.32.zip
or
http://sjeng.sourceforge.net/ftp/vorbis/vorbisgain.exe
Speek's Oggifier
http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/oggifier.htm
Peter's Winamp plugin for vorbis input
http://www.blorp.com/~peter/zips/in_vorbis.exe
If would be a big advantage for users if MJ, as well as other players, used the same methods of getting things done.

Thanks for the info. Version 9 will clean up this mess.
Thanks.

Does your comment that V9 will clean up this mess mean that my 12,000 mp3 files that I've run through replay gain in v8 will have to be done again in 9, or will that not work?
Thanks

Noooooooo please, don't change anything with replay gain or provide a "migration tool". I just finished replay gaining everything I have and I don't want to do this again...
Besides. If I replay gain my whole collection with some videos in there, MJ tries to download a plugin to "replay gain mpg". I don't understand that but I know, that I have to filter the collection first and then do a replay gain. Maybe this could be fixed, because I don't think it makes much sense on videos...

Not true. Some of us older guys are freightened by too large or too small women. Leave it in.
-
Well you older guys, sorry for that ;-)
But I really don't understand how you replay gain videos without a functional plugin update...

What MJ needs is support for it's proprietary Replay Gain for legacy purposes but standardize on Replay Gain as done in VorbisGain, MP3Gain, and WaveGain (all 3 write similar variables into the file, I believe).
