This is a maddening problem I have encountered with my new ipod classic 160.
I sync with itunes occasionally because I have some purchased videos there. As soon as I connect the ipod to MC I lose every other video in the list; I dont even have to sync anything. They are still on the ipod and show up as "other" but can no longer be accessed. This happens to all of the videos on the ipod, even the ones put on by MC. It doesn't seem to make a difference if the video is m4v or mp4, it happens to all of them every time.
Please tell me someone else has seen this before. It's really making me crazy.
itunes 7.5.020
ipod 1.03
MC 12.0404

Worked on it some more tonight. I thought that the m4v videos were the problem so I reset everything and loaded three mp4 vids from itunes. I ejected the ipod, shut down itunes, started MC and reconnected the ipod. I did not transfer anything from MC and ejected the ipod again. When I checked the video list on the ipod the middle video was not listed. This is just the strangest thing. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Hiya,
As far as I'm aware, its probably going to be the combination of two different apps causing this. You need to either sync/ connect with iTunes/ MC, not both at the same time, or these type of issues will crop up :)
In theory it should work, in practice each program does things differently and will cause problems.
Have you tried syncing the purchased videos with MC? (AFAIK they should work, so long as you've authorised the computer in iTunes first)

Yeah, I figured that was the problem. For now I'm probably just going to use itunes :(
I haven't tried syncing the m4v videos with MC because I assumed itunes needs to send over a key of some sort to decrypt them. I can try it but it will only work once because as soon as I plug in to MC my video list blows up. I'm not sure its worth it because I do add new videos occasionally (darn you NFL Network!).

Apple's videos should work.
-
Cool! I'll try it tonight. Thanks.
-
Tried it. The m4v videos will not import into MC >:(
I tried renaming them to mp4 and no joy there either.
So close....
You can get them in if you import a playlist from itunes but they are in the music category. Will they sync correctly from there?
-
Did you check the filetype for import? It's listed under video/Quicktime.
-
Affirmative. It is checked. I get the typical:
Imported 0 new files.
Failed to import 2 files.
File names are nice and short too.
-
Can you play them with Quicktime?
-
I tried several files and they will indeed play in quicktime.
-
I just tried importing an m4v video (actually I deleted an existing one in MC, and tried reimporting it). There was no error. The video is DRM protected. Transferring to an iPod (iPod Classic) succeeded too except that I had to do it twice :). The first time, I had conversion option set to "iPod Native", that did not work because our conversion routine could not convert Apple DRM'd video. The second time I turned conversion off and it worked.

There is a 64 character limit and it includes both the path and filename.

Yeah, I don't know what my problem is then. I tried it on my htpc and on my laptop with no joy. They play in quicktime on both systems.
Library now has 1383 files. Search and update took 0:29.
Imported 0 new files.
Failed to import 3 files.
In-depth details:
Failed to import:
P:\itunes\Dogfights\04 Guadalcanal.m4v
P:\itunes\Dogfights\06 The Zero Killer.m4v
P:\itunes\Dogfights\11 Long Odds.m4v
They just wont go in!

Do you have Quicktime/iTunes installed on your computers?
-
Quicktime and itunes on both.
-
Is that bad? ?
I really don't know what else to try here. I have tried to make this work on three different computers with no results.

No. For Apple DRM'd m4v files, you need Quicktime installed. If you do not have any DRM'd files, you do not need them.
-
If there is anything else you can suggest I'd be grateful. Every copy of MC is rejecting my m4v files.
-
OK, so I messed around with this a bit more. I made some m4v files of my own and they imported with no problems into MC. The m4v files that I have purchased from itunes will NOT import. I don't care if MC12 doesnt play itunes purchases, I just want it to manage my ipod. Having to use itunes is like slow torture.
The question is, should MC be importing my purchased m4v files or is this not something it is capable of doing?
-
Are you trying to import the videos on the same computer you made purchases from Apple? Do they play on the same computer in iTunes or Quicktime player? I could not reproduce the importing problem, even though as I said before, playing back is another issue.
-
Yes, I am. They play fine on the computers they were downloaded on and on the other 2 itunes activated computers I view them on as well.
So, MC should be importing these files at minimum correct?
Is there some kind of log file I could send you to look at? I just don't understand why it's not working for me at all on ANY of the computer that I own.
-
You could try with a file thats only been activated on one computer :)
Shouldn't affect things (IMHO anyway), but worth a try.
Never tried Apple purchased videos personally, but a few DRM free m4v files I've tried haven't had any real problems.
Cheers
