Title: Not all MKV files will import
Post by: rpsweb on January 20, 2008, 08:06:12 am
hi there thanks for your time
I have a strange problem, when I import a folder containing mkv files only some will import, if I change the name of one the files that won't import they will import, but suddenly vanish from the library after a short while.

The files that wont import play on other players fine but not media center 12

I have fdd show and haali media splitter installed via the combined community codec pack

They probably contain a format that MC can't open natively to thumbnail.  You may find them under documents.  You may be able to find a DirectShow filter to play them.  You'll need to know what codec they use.

im not using thumbnail view
How I do view documents?

Ive checked the codec used by the non working file and its the same as others that do import.

I discovered one mkv file in my library that would playback although two would not import or play via the tree. Only when I moved the files into a new folder were they discovered.

d:\Video Archive\Film\1.mkv was moved into a new sub-folder of Film, then everything suddenly worked.

Very strange that although MC could see the actual file locations via the tree that they would not play until moved. I did not change file type or anything else, just moved them.

I think by now it should be clear that MC12 has some serious issues with the mkv format. They don't always import as video files, and sometimes won't even play by launching the files in Explorer if they'er not in the library. It doesn't always happen, is difficult to reproduce and is just downright baffling. Various theories have been tested; are the files on a network drive? Are the filenames too long? etc. etc.

Bottom line for me so far is that I've managed to get them all to work, unless they're somehow corrupted. It's just taken some extra work to do so.

I wouldn't say it has issues with the format in general.  As long as you have the appropriate DirectShow filters installed (which would be required for any DirectShow player -- including WiMP), MC12 handles playback of MKV files just fine.

It certainly does have trouble analyzing and importing them though, for certain.  Part of the problem is probably that MKV files are quite sophisticated containers (much like MP4 only more capable), and can contain a wide variety of media "types".  While Video MKV files are certainly the most common, you can certainly make audio-only MKV files, and a number of other MKV "types" (you can even build complex menu systems with multiple "program streams" and have them work almost just like a DVD).  I use them for Surround Sound audio files, and they work quite well...

When you said "via the tree" did you mean the files were already imported as video? It was not clear from your post whether you checked the Documents tree. Sometimes a video would be erroneously imported as "Data" type due to DirectShow filter problems. If that were the case, you would not find them under video, and you would keep thinking that they did not import. If you can find the files under "Documents", you can change the media type from Data to Video.

Sorry you're right, my post was ambiguous.

It was REALLY strange:

Via the tree>My Computer, I browsed to the file location; they had not been imported, nor would they.

I double-checked the import settings, and these were never files that had been removed, nevertheless I disabled that option.

Once I realized I had an .mkv that would play in the library, and remembering that these files played in MC prior to being moved, I got suspicious. So I moved the files into a sub-folder, via Windows Explorer (as noted, they were already in a sub-folder of the root drive), and everything was pudding.

I have had this happen in the past, and never discovered this "fix" as the answer.
