Title: A question about importing data files
Post by: p7389 on January 25, 2008, 12:49:50 pm
I know you can use MC to handle/organise just about any file, and act as a launcher for them.. I thought I woudl extend my usage a bit and created a new viewscheme which I set to mediatype=data, and start organising some documents (pdfs mostly) but I can't seem to get MC to import them. It's probably some setting somewhere, but I've searched for it in vain...

Any tips in general on how to organise data/documents in MC would be appreciated too.

Thank you,

In the import dialog, check under advanced to make sure you've checked the filetype.

I looked there, and now I looked again. I don't see it.

The entire category, Docs and Webpages, isn't present:

Adobe Acrobat (pdf)
MS Office files (doc, xls, csv, ppt, mde, mdb)
Text (txt, rtf)
Webpage Files (html, htm, mht)

(taken from the help file)

Just out of curiosity, I suppose you also support .docx, but haven't gotten around to update the help file...

Import is organized by media type.  Audio, Video, Images, Documents.

Are you using MC12 and a recent version?

I am using the latest, 421, and I see only this

Maybe you are looking at the file associations.

You need to select the file types in the folder specific import options (click the advanced button):

In addition to the listed document file types I have imported other file types simply by dragging the files to MC - for example, srt and idx+rar subtitle files:

The thing is, I cannot select the data file types since that entire tree is absent from my import dialogue... That was what my small screen cap was meant to illustrate.

Where exactly is this "import dialogue"? Does it have a button for advanced options?
Can you post a screenshot that shows the complete window?

E.g. mine is:
Tools > Auto-Import Options... > Add Folder... > Advanced

(or:  click an existing folder name > Settings For This Folder... > Advanced)

Alex, you beat me to it. I don't think there's any 'maybe' about it, p7389's screen shot is definitely the file associations options.

Tip:
If you want other data types to be auto-imported from a watched folder(s), and don't mind a little registry editing, the steps outlined here (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=39147.msg266295#msg266295) should work for any file extension you care to add.

I agree with  ?

We need help from JRiver. I tried to search the files in the MC program folder and the Windows registry, but I couldn't quickly find where the file type categories are stored.

If they are stored inside the uneditable program files the problem is even weirder because we are using files from the same v.12.0.421 installer.

How about checking here:

Tools > Options > General > Advanced > Features > Data Media Mode

is that checked or unchecked?

I think you nailed it. Why didn't you say that earlier?  ;D

I wonder if the option is disabled by default. In general, it is a quite unnecessary option. The document branch doesn't appear in the three unless the library contains documents.

That did it!

I knew it was some setting somewhere...

Thanks for the assistance, everyone.
