CTRL Shift T will give you Roulette/Carousel
A First Person Shooter Media Player?
Use the arrow keys to navigate. Enter plays. X in upper right exits. a and d also move the tray.
This will require a video card that does 3D graphics well. Most reasonably modern cards will work.
-
I hope it is not Russian.
-
Hehe awesome, kind of difficult to get the mouse back though!
-
:)
-
It is quite a Russian Roulette, but it has potential. MC didn't die...
The mouse goes wacko and the available selection seem to be limited. I suppose it will become a display visualization if it stays, correct?
I would have preferred Album Art in a 3D landscape, but maybe this is just the start.
-
This was just for fun. Next build it will work.

3-D file browsing. This could be the next big thing. Will we have to buy a pair of 3-D glasses as well?

3-D file browsing, now who would think of that???

Lol... It certainly is... interesting. Kind of like CoverFlow on crack!
I noticed too, that my entire library doesn't show up. There's a spot where a Frank Zappa album and a Weird Album overlap, kind of sharing the same place. I'm assuming that's like the edge of where it can go.
If this reacted to a shuffled playlist, like spinning around to always stay on the currently playing track, that could be kind of cool.
As an actual media browser, I'm not sure how useful it really is. I mean, it works, but it's not really efficient. But then, I don't care for Cover Flow on an actual computer either. It just slows me down. Now, on the iPod Touch it works great. But I digress.
It'll definitely be fun to see where you guys run with this. :)

Sounds a rubbish idea to me! :)
Not that I spent over 4 Months of my Disertation research on it or anything.

I was just playing around with this carosel thing.
Would it be possible to, instead of rendering everything as a cube, which, honestly, looks a little tacky and kind of 1990's, to make to render all of the audio so it actually looks like CD cases? Like, render a much slimmer object, and make it slightly wider than tall, and stick like that black CD case border down the left hand side?
And then, what would be even cooler would be to allow us to specify a back image and show that on the back side of the case instead of showing the same cover on all sides of a cube.
And if you really wanted to get fancy, maybe even add in the ability to add liner notes images that can be opened and read all using a page turning animation.
That, to me, would be a much more useful and unique feature that I don't think any other audio player has.
-
Adding to Doof's post...
It would also look better if the "selected" item always finished moving to it's largest position even if you stopped pressing the arrows before it got there, so it was more obvious what was currently selected. Then, when you activated it with space/whatever instead of just playing it, open the case and fling out the the tracks. Add a selection check box next to each track, Play and Add buttons to play only the selected tracks, and a Play All button (default). Or just spin the case around and make it really big showing the tracks like coverflow, but that's probably patented/copyrighted.

WOW, this is pretty cool, nice work guys! Imaginative and creative, pretty fun too.
I like it and look forward to it's development and refinement.
I like Doof's idea about the CD-case type look. Might be nice too if we were able to control what was included in the Carosel such as entire library or a particular playlist.
-
I think the usefulness in a 3-D display of music would be to show the relationships amongst the songs/albums kind of like http://www.musicplasma.com/, but it would be much cooler in 3-D.

CD cases -- the horrible jewel cases? I really don't have any love for them. I have almost 3000 and many of them are more or less broken. I have them in cardboard boxes in a storage room and I am happy that they are out of sight.
Here is a good example. The case is broken in three different ways and it is only 19 years old. I would have expected it to last at least 100 years. :P

i like it. realy nice idea. maybe it could go fullscreen. :)
i understood, and that did also work, that you could get out of the carousel by pressing escape. that does not work anymore. when i close it with my mouse and i have Thv underneath it. thv is not responding anymore. the task manager says its running though. stopping the music brings it all back up.

Who said anything about useful?
-
One can only hope? :'(
Then again cover flow ain't' that usefull.
I always thought a way to scatter you albums in any place you wanted, kind of like on the desktop (http://www.sprote.com/clutter/), would be cool.

Well, I thought it was obvious I wasn't talking about having everybody scan in their actual cases or anything. The goal was, mainly, just to get rid of those tacky 3D boxes. I thought that by using a shape more similar to the actual CD case it would give the illusion of actually browsing through your CD collection. Especially if combined with using the back cover and liner notes images.
-
Doof, don't take what I said too seriuosly (...and I understood that you meant a case lookalike placeholder).
I just meant that I don't want to be reminded of the jewel cases. I have all CDs in my MC library and I rarely need to use the cases anymore.
-
It would be fun to have a "Show my CD collection as the neglected mess they really are" option in MC, wouldn't it? I'm not sure though, how easy it would be for them to render the floor of my car... ;)
-
I'm not big on Cover Flow, especially when using a large desktop screen or LCD TV because I love to see tons of albums in a useful birds-eye view, but some type of Cover flow like/3d view in conjunction with MC's Tile view would great; in light of the new group feature and tiered keywords it could make such a graphically intense option a great add-on to the static Tile view.
Theatre View suffers because there is no way to quickly scroll through albums when they are displayed horizontal under Artist, Genre, etc. It's just a big souped up verion of Tiles mode.
I can't help thinking that viewing by Artist Album (auto) or similar would be greatly enhanced if a pop-up appears (like the Photo previe pop-up) and it is a 3d scrollable Cover Flow-esque group of CD/LPs for that artist.....e.g. you can set the bottom window for Tile and the top window for the 3d group, that way you could scroll through Tiles of Artists or Genre and then spin through the albums in 3d mode. I'm not big on 3d cubes; I think 3d images of the disc/lp would like much sharper as cubes don't really "speak" for the packaging of music.

This is interesting....not as much for what it is now, but for the possibilities it seems to bring up.....much like some of the others have described above.
I like it - glad to see you are still thinking of new ways to make the browsing experience better....
-
For 3D file browsing: how about rooms are folders and then your files are scattered on the walls, floor, etc. You can walk around to find something. That would be pretty interesting.

How about a virtual record store? Different genres in different areas, with a video section in the corner... Random album covers from your collection placed as posters on the walls? And with a JimH avatar as the store clerk subtly finding ways to put down your musical taste as you load a shopping cart shaped playlist?
-
This looks promising. How about doing it somewhat like piclens? It would be very nice for pictures as well.

Some great ideas here!
I am excited as to the future of this aspect of MC. Can't wait to se where this goes.

Nah...isn't that kind of boring? :) How about a randomly generated landscape with "Album trees" where you pick albums or songs from the branches :) Of course with full weather effects and swaying grass... mmm!

love the Roulette/carousel concept [just like I love coverflow]. I know it's still in early stages so here's a request: instead (or in addition) to using the arrows or keys to move the carousel, would it be possible to grab a point in the carousel with the mouse and drag it round and possibly even having an 'accelerator' like the iphone coverflow (ie grab carousel with mouse and 'fling it' to spin it along).
no guessing that I'm smitten with the iphone interface ;)

Gets my vote as the best d*** implementation i've seen to date, beats cover flow by miles.
Tho its only for pix atm i think some of the big boys just might snap it up

piclens is really cool....maybe could get it run in conjunction with xpTunes ? now that would be cool
