How about a DSP addition called "Night Listening Mode" that works some magic on audio to keep it sounding louder without waking others up? I know lowering the bass is key here but there are probably a few other tweaks that can be used to help even more.

It probably depends on the material in your walls and what frequencies they don't stop, so I myself would go into another room or outside your house, and just play around with the equalizer until it sounds good to you.

For movies, AC3Filter does have dynamic range compression that one can play with. Otherwise, I'd just use headphones, wired or Bluetooth.

In general, I've heard poor reviews of most wireless headphones unless they were bluetooth. Do yours sound good enough for you to use regularly?

I'm sure I read somewhere the feature on most Amps called "Loudness" is for this.
Raising the the bass and the high levels allows you to listen
to audio quieter while still be able hear the key parts of what's playing,
although most people just use it to get a more thumpy noise.

Actually, on mine, the feature is called "Midnight". Loudness does something else that I don't like, but Midnight can be nice when watching movies late at night.

My Onkyo amp has both Loudness and Late Night modes.
AFAIK, Loudness upps treble and bass at low volume levels. This works pretty well when listening to music at low levels (at night). This is to make the music sound better at low levels.
Late Night flattens the dynamic range so that a loud sound (say, nuclear explosion) which would be normally much louder than the background wouldn't be THAT loud - this is mostly for movies (at night).
This allows to use relatively high volume levels not being afraid that a sudden BOOM wakes up the neighbors.
It would be nice to have this feature built into MC since not everyone has it available on the hardware level.

Night mode usually means using the built-in speakers on the HDTV rather than fthe floorstanders and tube amps ; )
