Is there a way to not have media center show in the taskbar? It's open just on my TV extended desktop and is the only thing there. I can minimize to tray, but can I run in tray? If there's no MC option anyone know of a windows extension to add to the shortcut to run in tray only? Powertoy? Open source app? Any app? Preferably one that doesn't think it needs its own system tray icon, I hate useless stuff there.

right click on your Media Center shortcut (the one you double click on to launch media center) and choose properties...
Set the "Run" value to "Minimized" as shown and click OK.
Coupled with your MC setting to reduce to the system tray, this should give you what you're after.

I think what brentk was asking for was for it not to show in the taskbar when maximised. This would be quite a nice feature actually. It was one of the things that Trillian did that kept me from changing to MSN Messenger for ages even though MSN had advanced so far ahead of it in other ways...
It would mean you could always leave it maximised without it getting in the way, thereby avoiding having to wait for it to restore itself every time you want to use it.

aahh, I see what you mean...
There are definitely 3rd party apps out there that do this...
trayit is one that springs to mind, though I've never used it... http://www.teamcti.com/trayit/trayit.htm

Yup, you guys got what I was talking about. Trillian is a program I use for it's invisibility as well. Also winamp although I'm trying to abandon it....
Nice try on TrayIt, but that's for minimized applications only. Also, the first time I used it everything I had open suddenly closed. So, take that for what you will. HideIt was actually the program I remembered (and even used once upon a time) but that's for background utils you don't want to see at all. Any other suggestions? Google wasn't helpful, neither was sourceforge. Feature request?

A related question, is there a way to keep MC running in the background so it can download podcasts but not use up much memory? I would like to be able to click on the icon and open it to sync.

Cheers for the link to trayit Marko, I like it :)
It does appear that it should be able to do what we want, there's an option there 'Hide application from the Taskbar all the time, keep tray icon only' but it's greyed out on mine; no idea how to get it to work, but haven't really had much of a chance to play around with it as yet.

if it would be possible of only having the taskbar icon, would alt-tab work then?
[Alt]+[Tab] would work, but only as long as the application is not minimized. If an application is minimized to the tray, it will not be shown in the [Alt]+[Tab] list.
