Title: What do you use to get Album Art and Lyrics?
Post by: castingflame on February 12, 2008, 04:38:03 pm
How do you get your Album Art and Lyrics for your music. Do you do each track manually or use a 3rd party program to do it for you in batches?

How do you get your Album Art[...]
"Right click -> Cover Art -> Get from Internet". It's not perfect, but it works for me.

[...]Lyrics for your music.[...]
For Lyrics I use KingSpartas Data Master. For me it takes ~5h for 5000 files in batch mode. You may find at SpartaSoft.com (http://www.spartasoft.com/MC-Plugins/12/index.html (http://www.spartasoft.com/MC-Plugins/12/index.html)). It looks up the lyrics in its own database. Lyrics you allready have, can be uploaded to be stored for others, lyrics you don't have are downloaded to your library. This can set to be done automaticly in batch mode.

For Cover Art, I start with the Get from Internet like STFeder said. I like 500x500 images so if it doesn't return at least that, I then go to cover sites like:
http://albumart.org/
http://www.coverhunt.com/
http://www.slothradio.com/covers/

Sometimes though I'll just sit at Amazon or Walmart and find them manually. Amazon is nice because sometimes their art isn't good but customers upload better ones. And by all means, when you have a good quality cover art, do a Submit to Internet so it will help the next person.

Again like STFeder, for lyrics, I start with Data Master. After I get what I can from there, I then go to Doof's Lyrics Editor (http://www.dooftoo.com/lyricseditor.html). I go through every song I have, even if it came from Data Master, just to make sure it's what I want with capitalization and such. I then use his search for any missing ones to hopefully find the lyrics out on a website. You'll find there are some better sites than others. Finally after editing all the lyrics, I upload with Data Master to again help the next person.

I use the same workflow for lyrics.

For cover art, I do all of it manually. I had too many that were technically good (500x500 images) but did not look good, so I like to check them all out. If I cannot find a good one, I just scan it in. Note: almost everything I have is ripped from CDs that I purchased or LPs that I converted to digital, so I have the cover art to scan if needed.

I've added the 3 cover art sites listed here to my bookmarks.

There is so much good quality cover art available now.  Thanks for the links dcwebman.

I found the second link (coverhunt.com) performs some nasty auto-image resizing of low quality/resolution work.  Compare the "Sailing to Philadelphia" covers at:

http://coverhunt.com/search/mark+knopfler

vs:

http://www.slothradio.com/covers/?adv=&artist=mark+knopfler&album=

I've been uploading mine to Amazon, and when I remember, to JR as well.  MCs interface could use some improvement in the cover art area.  Its a bit of a crap shoot.  I had created some nice 500x500 art, loaded it into a folder I was currently ripping the CD into, and at the end of the process, MC overwrote my art with some poorer quality art.  I'd like to see an amazon.com-like interface (when multiple pieces of user-contributed art is available), where art is presented and quick mouse-over's show the image in full detail for quick comparisons.

Absolutely i stopped using coverhunt for that main reason, slothradio also has covers for Amazon UK & Germany.

the first link albumart does not come up with hits for anything i'm looking for.

For the last few days I've been trying "Zortam MP3 Media Studio Pro"  http://www.zortam.com/index.php?s=musicnoter (http://www.zortam.com/index.php?s=musicnoter)
It has a good hit rate with Lyrics and Album Art and very good batch processing abilities. So much so I bought a registered Version.  :) Recommended

I have also found "Album Art Download" http://sourceforge.net/projects/album-art/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/album-art/) This simutaniously searches up to 16 different sites for album art. It then displays them with image size and file size information so you can choose the best one suited to your situation. The searches happen very quickly so I let it search all 16 every time. This handy little program is FREE under the GPL licence.

When I have the correct Tags, Art and Lyrics I use "Data Master" to upload them to the server.

That's great, but it really doesn't help anybody else get cover art for their files. So unless you then submit those images to YADB, it's kind of irrelevant. ::)

Personally, I tend to just hit Google Images and do a search for the album. I then look for the biggest image I can find. But it has to have large dimensions as well as a "large" filesize. That tends to let me know that it's pretty good quality. I should probably bookmark a lot of these sites that are being mentioned... :P

Don't forgot to utilize the Send To feature to launch a broswer search from within MC:

www.walmart.com//search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=4104&search_query="[Album Artist (custom)] [Album]"&Continue.x=0&Continue.y=0&Continue=Find&ic=24_0

www.roots-archives.com//search/?query="[Album Artist (custom)] [Album]"&x=0&y=0

images.google.com//images?q="[album artist (custom)] [album]"&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi

under parameter. works for me.

the trick is to do a search on the page you want to search. change the searched word with the tags you want to use, take the http:// part away and add a / to every other /"

It's all here:

I have been requesting multiple cover arts for an album for a long time since sometimes an album comes out with more than one cover. Plus, it also would solve the problem of making sure you get the best quality image in YADB.

My suggestion is why don't you hand scan them?  It isn't as bad as one might think.  With a good scanner, you could even scan two at a time and then crop them.
Not everyone has the CD to scan when you buy digital music online.

This looks more like a music organiser than to search for cover art.

Which sites does it check ?..screenshots only show amazon, for which there are quite a few tools already, some via just the web browser.

I'm sorry, but I need to close this thread.  The subject is a gray area.
