Title: Tivo Series 3 HD and MC 12 - Can't Get Server To Work
Post by: msnider on February 16, 2008, 11:05:20 am
I recently purchased the Tivo Series 3 HD and I'm trying to get the Tivo to find Media Center.  I have the Tivo hooked up to my wireless network and everything works fine in that respect.  It can find my music and pics from my home network, but I had a Tivo Series 2 a while ago and I used it with Media Center and I loved it.  I want it back.  I have the Tivo Desktop installed and running, I have the Media Center server running, but no matter what I do, I can't get Tivo to find my music on Media Center.  I have un-installed and re-installed Media Center and Tivo Desktop.  I'm running Media Center 12.0.404 (registered) with Windows Vista and when I start the Media Center server this is what shows up:

02/16/08 09:01:22 - Starting...
02/16/08 09:01:22 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
02/16/08 09:01:22 - Installing new API.
02/16/08 09:01:22 - Unable to copy new API.
02/16/08 09:01:22 - Please stop all programs (like TiVo Desktop) that might be using it.

If the problem persists, remove the TiVo Desktop application, reboot the system, and try again. You can reinstall the TiVo Desktop later.
02/16/08 09:01:22 - Failed to start sharing

I've stopped Tivo Desktop but I still can't get Tivo to find my Media Center.  I realize this may be posted somewhere else, but I couldn't find anything on Tivo Series 3 issues with Media Center Server.  Anyone have any suggestions or fixes for me?  Thanks a lot.

I'll take a look further on monday, but in the meantime: make sure you run with administrator privileges. Installing the beacon may require them.

Also, post your system info here.

It looks like the beacon is not installed at all, though I don't know why the TiVo Server cannot install a new one.

First, let's try this: install the TiVo Desktop (re-install if necessary), and make sure the beacon is running.
In the control panel Administrative Tools, click on services and look for the TiVo Beacon. If it is there, right click and choose properties, and post the path name here.

And, if it is there, then start MC and copy-and-paste the TiVo status page here.

Tivo desktop was already installed (I did not re-install) and the Tivo beacon is running and installed - path name:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon\TiVoBeacon.exe" /service

Figured it out!  Don't ask me how (something to do with the firewall and a port), but I was just messing around with some things and it's all good.  Songs, genres, titles, pics....all show up on my Series 3 from Media Center 12.  Cool.

May have spoke too soon.  Tivo recognizes my music, but now it's not playing the music.  Just silence.  My TV has a screenshot of the song, the artist, and the album - but no music.  Here's what the Media Center server says:

02/18/08 17:49:09 - Starting...
02/18/08 17:49:09 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
02/18/08 17:49:09 - Connecting to Beacon.
02/18/08 17:49:10 - Running on Port 8079
02/18/08 17:49:57 - Bad Request: Unknown Command /TiVoConnect??Command=FlushServer
02/18/08 17:50:26 - Bad Request: Unknown Command /TiVoConnect??Command=FlushServer
02/18/08 17:51:01 - Browsing File: C:\Users\Matthew\Music\And you Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead- So Divided-06- So Divided.mp3
02/18/08 17:51:03 - Browsing File: C:\Users\Matthew\Music\And you Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead- So Divided-06- So Divided.mp3

Help??!!

Again - firewall? If it can browse, it should be able to play too.

Frustrating.  Back to square one.  I re-booted my comp and the Media Center server is now back to:

02/18/08 18:09:44 - Starting...
02/18/08 18:09:44 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
02/18/08 18:09:44 - Connecting to Beacon.
02/18/08 18:09:44 - Unable to connect to Beacon, the API does not exist.
02/18/08 18:09:44 - Failed to start sharing

The first step then is to find out why JRiver Media Center thinks the TiVo beacon isn't installed. Try different things to see if you can determine when it finds the beacon, and when it doesn't.

Right click on the MC icon and choose "run as administrator"

I was getting that problem until I started doing that.

OK - Tivo can finally find Media Center and my music.  I see it on my TV screen.  I click on a song, but now it won't play the song.  I get this message when I look on Media Center's server page (my Tivo desktop is paused, by the way):

02/22/08 16:17:48 - Starting...
02/22/08 16:17:48 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
02/22/08 16:17:48 - Connecting to Beacon.
02/22/08 16:17:48 - Running on Port 8079
02/22/08 16:18:44 - Browsing File: C:\Users\Matthew\Music\Downloads\Fugees - Mona Lisa (Nappy Heads remix).mp3

What gives?  No sound - nothing.

Then when I hit Live TV to get out of the Media Center playing now screen, this is what pops up in the Media Center Tivo Server screen:

02/22/08 16:35:57 - Bad Request: Unknown Command /TiVoConnect??Command=FlushServer

That message is normal - it's something TiVo implemented long after I did the TiVo Server, and doesn't do anything useful on our system.

What's showing on your TiVo screen when you try to play?

How'd you fix the beacon installation problem?

Howdy!

Funny, I am having the same original issue you reported with MC telling me to stop running TiVo Desktop.  I reinstalled TiVo Desktop and still get the same error. I love that you are discussing your issue, but you didn't explain how you were able to bypass the first errors you were getting.  Could you please explain?  Maybe we'll get this fixed together :)

After reading up a little more on it, I see that it supports up to 4 tuners. And it can record up to 2 shows at once. Dont know if Media Center has these capabilities though.

I think it will also allow you to remotely schedule recordings like from Yahoos TV listings, as there are TiVo record options there.
