There are cheaper options that work just as well if saving pilots is your main goal.

Ejection Systems Are Cheap In Comparison.
What Is Expensive Is Anti-Jamming, Radar Jamming (Or Stealth Technology), Munition Guidance, Night Vision, Lasers (For Some Guided Munitions), And Most Of That Is Not Off the Shelf Technology (You Can't Buy It At K-Mart).
You Must Keep Upgrading The Technologies So You Don't Have Other Countries Defeating Your Technology's before You Take Off From The Ground When You Go To War.
