Title: iPod firmware update system in 12.0.461
Post by: lalittle on March 20, 2008, 05:37:28 pm
12. NEW: Added the ability to update iPod firmware within the player.

Wait... so you're saying we no longer need iTunes to update iPods!?  I can finally take iTunes OFF my system once and for all!?  You guys should have included some fanfare to go with this update.

Rick will do the end zone dance when we know it's working.  We might go on and do some other manufacturers if this works out.

I can't test it since my iPods are all updated, but eventually there will be new updates from apple to test.  If anybody has an iPod that is not yet updated and wants to test this, please let us know how it goes.

Does the MC iPod updater work the same as the iTunes version -- i.e. when you update, does it connect to apple, download the latest update, and apply it?  What about "restoring"?  Can MC be used for this as well?

Thanks,

Larry

We download the firmware from Apple and copy it to your iPod.  It should be the same as iTunes would do.

You could still try updating if you have the courage.  I think it will update even if the version is the same.

I have a 3G Ipod but the Update Firmware option is greyed out.

I know I'm not running the latest version, so how do I do the update?

12. NEW: Added the ability to update iPod firmware within the player.
I plugged in my 5G Video iPod (MA146LL) that's still running firmware version 1.2. It took a LONG time to finally come up in MC, a lot longer than previous versions, a little over 4 minutes. I synced and was expecting to see that old database version message or I needed to update my firmware message, but nothing happened. I discovered the Update Firmware menu item and tried it. After the iPod showed up again in the tree, another 4 minutes, I ejected and checked the firmware. Sure enough, it was now 1.3. Nice job!

Besides the long time to finally connect, the only other issue I saw was the cut off words at the end of the upgrade firmware message.

I also saw that.  The message was truncated and garbled.

The previous message about wrong firmware should probably be revised.  I think Swellguy knows that.

If the Update Firmware button is grayed out it means we don't have some required information about your iPod to execute an update. If you email me (rick at jriver dot com) your log files I can look into it.

All 5.5G iPods are disabled while we do some more testing on them.

Log file on it's way.

My iPod is taking 4 minutes to load too.

Just bumping this back up.  It's an important change.

How about some fall back protection. That would mean that MC would keep multiversions of the firmware on the PC and then you could select which version to load.

Interesting possibility.  If needed, we might do something like that.  Thanks.

What about restoring? That's the only reason for me to install ITunes. I just have to learn that ITunes don't run on W2K.

I agree.  Restoring is sometimes the only way to solve certain iPod issues.  In fact, I always do a restore after doing an update since I've run accross too many examples of the iPod not working correctly after a firmware update.  In order to completely take iTunes out of the picture, we need a way to Restore the iPod.  Is there any chance of adding this capability to MC?  An "initialize" is not as "complete" as a restore.

Thanks,

Larry

Did an update firmware check using 465 on my ipod classic 80gb that was loaded with 1.1.1 (updated via itunes).  MC 12 465 reported I was running 1.0.3 and wanted to update to 1.1.1.  This seems to indicate detection of the wrong firmware version. (I had been running 1.0.3 before my itunes update a few days before).

The utility isn't working correctly with Classics and 3G Nano's right now.

Same thing on my 160GB Classic. I've been running 1.1.1 for some time, but MC12 said I was using 1.0.3.

Looking forward to this working properly and letting me uninstall iTunes.
