Disable your virus checker (to test).  It may be preventing reading/writing the registry, etc.

Check the "Weird problems" thread in my signature for more ideas.

Try simplifying.  Disable auto-import, podcasting, etc.

Also, posting the tail of a hang log might give some clues.
