Title: Theater View development has been a bit quiet lately...
Post by: raym on May 01, 2008, 06:45:47 pm
... I hope this means something BIG is coming (rather than nothing at all).

There's been a few great feature requests recently. Any love?

Cheers.

Please?

Indeed...please add the ability to browse files not yet imported in the database. This is the only reason I have to leave mc and use another app on the htpc's...think external hdd's and memory sticks with photo's / video's etc..and we use those a lot...

The lack of Theatre View development is why I've (reluctantly) given up on MC.  :'(

Maybe I'll come back to it if they implement even half the stuff that it needs to bring it up to the level that other (free) HTPC software is already at.

I feel here I have to stick up for the downtrodden Theatre View  :)

For me it ticks most boxes. I had a brief affair with the "other (free) HTPC software" and it was an awful mistake. I believe at the time I described it as a polished turd. Thing is, even that glossy UI became very same-y after a week of use. The TV guide stuff is pretty good, but I have a separate PVR in my av setup so have no need for it. Perhaps that's where MC's Theatre View falls down? I'm racking my brain for something else MCE does that MC doesn't (other than mess up your library!). Conversely, the power & flexibility of MC with its view schemes makes Theatre View an absolute joy. As well as that, with a bit of skin and font tweaking (and installing G-Force) it looks lovely on my 1920x1080.

It's not that I think it doesn't need more development, but right now I believe it's a d**n fine looking piece of GUI when you have everything setup to your personal tastes.

I'm interested to know what features exist in MS's MCE that are lacking in JR's MC Theatre View? Perhaps I've missed something.

MCE doesn't cut it either - I wasn't referring to that.  ;)

Since you asked, here's some things that Theatre View really lacks.

The ability to show descriptions of items and to bring the "Info" button on my MCE remote out of the wilderness are definitely features noticably missing. Perhaps if MC had a decent TV guide interface I might even use my TV card ... though at the moment I'm not too fussed.

I'm not exactly sure what use stacks are either.

That was fun.
