I use 54mbit/sec wifi and am curious if I got a laptop with an HD-DVD drive, would i be able to stream HD-DVD movies over the network without it skipping?
Anyone tried this under these conditions?

Short answer: no.
I believe with 54mbps wifi - your effective bandwidth is really less than half that. And HD-DVD or Blu-ray both require much higher bandwidth. I can barely play uncompressed DVD over 54mbps wifi.
You may try 802.11n which theoretically supports 300mbps. But, even that may not work as realistic bandwidth is significantly less.

Osho is correct - there is a good link at Wikipedia outlining the data rates requried for the formats at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high_definition_optical_disc_formats but basically you need:
DVD: 12M/Bits +
HD-DVD: 37M/Bits +
Blu-ray: 54M/Bits +
Nothing beats blue string for the reliable availability of bandwidth for streaming HD Content!
