Title: Portable install on ipod issue!
Post by: oias.heeda on June 06, 2008, 03:56:56 am
Hey there, basically what i want to do, is a portable install onto my 80g ipod, then tell it to look at that same ipod to import the songs into the library.
However when i do this it doesn't see any of my mp3 files on the ipod.
Is this possible to do at the moment?
If not will it be in the future?
Basically what i would like is to just carry my ipod around and when i go to my friends plug it in and use jriver to play the tunes i have on the ipod. That would be awesome!

You should be able to do this.

Install to the iPod, using the 'Portable Install' option.

Run the program off the iPod.

Run import, pointing it to the same iPod.  Since the music folder on an iPod is hidden, you may need to manually enter it (i.e. G:\iPod_Control\Music\) or enable viewing hidden folders with Explorer to browse to it.

Since drive letters will likely change from computer to computer, can you enter a relative path somehow?

Media Center _will_ store the paths in a relative fashion.

If you look in a file list, you'll see something like:
(Install Drive):\iPod_Control\Music\...

Make sure that on your iPod your "iPod_Control" folder and your "Music" folders and their contents are not hidden.  I had this exact same problem with the portable install on my iPod.  The files weren't importing because they were "hidden".  Once I change the properties of these folders and my music files so that they were not "hidden" it worked fine for me.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad that helped you. It took me a while to figure that one out.
