Dear J River,
About 2 weeks ago, MC 12 crashed one evening and has not recovered. I don't really recall why it crashed, but I was driving it using mediabridge and netremote at the time. My PC is running windows XP SP 2. Some of the symptoms are:
1) Every time I started Medicenter after that I got the "encountered a problem .... do you want to send a report to microsoft" error
2) Windows explorer started to crash when I right-clicked a folder.
I did some research on this and found info on shell extensions causing this problem, so I disabled all and then turned them on one by one to find it was the JR mediacenter extension that was causing the problem. So I disabled it and windows explorer was fixed.
3) Thinking I had a problem with MC12 I tried to un-install it. I got the message that installwizard had "encountered a problem .... do you want to send a report to microsoft". Surprised by this I repeated it a few times and got the same error.
4) So I tried to update it to the latest version off the web - same problem.
5) I probably should have reported the problem here first for some advice at this stage, but I decided to plow on, so I used revo to un-install the program. I then re-installed it and I still have the installwizard crash.
6) I read your weird bugs thread and it hinted antivirus / spyware might be a problem, so I disabled bitdefender, still installwizard crashes. I'm now stuck.
Any advice?
Will

Please install this build if you haven't tried:

Have there been any reboots between any of these steps?
-
I had tried 514 and now I have tried 515, no change. Any more ideas?
-
Yes, I have rebooted many times. Should I re-boot and the try 515 again?

Make sure nothing (MC related) is set to auto start. Reboot. Right click nothing. Do not open explorer. Try installing.
It probably won't help but it is probably worth a shot at this point.
-
At what point does the installer crash?
Try disabling (or even uninstalling) any programs that do system-wide hooks. Virus checkers, parental controls, skinning programs, keyboard / mouse handlers, etc.
Sorry we don't have a more concrete answer. This isn't a common problem.

DarkPenguin, sadly the problem remains.
Matt, the program gets through the initial part where the blue bar goes across the screen, then things go quiet for about 30 seconds, then up comes the error. I have bit defender and a logitech mouse/keyboard program, so I shut them down and everything else that has an icon in the bottom right corner of the taskbar. It still crashes I'm afraid.

You could try this thread for ideas:

I already tried the Anti-virus / spam parts but the rest did not sound similar. Any more ideas?

Check your drives for disk space.
Empty your trash.
Delete files from temp folders.
-
Are all the files gone from the old installation?
I'm curious if Media Jukebox will install.

Apologies, I went away for a couple of days.
JimH,
I have done as you requested but that has not cured the problem. I have 43Gig empty on the drive.
DarkPenguin,
Media Jukebox did not install either, it did exactly the same thing. Does this spark any ideas?

Sometimes disabling a program isn't enough. Try uninstalling.
It's almost certain that something on your system is preventing install.

It removes a lot of potential issues.
This is typically an OS permissions, Antivirus, Antispam, AntiKid software issue.

I have completely uninstalled bitdefender 2008 and I have got a change. I still can't install a new version over the old, but I do get a new error when I use add/remove programs to uninstall it:
"error loading C:\documents and settings\will\local settings\temp\jrmediauninstall.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed"
Any ideas?

"error loading C:\documents and settings\will\local settings\temp\jrmediauninstall.dll
A new error is good. Now try deleting the contents of that directory and rebooting. Then install.

JimH,
The only file that wasn't locked in the temp directory was the JRmediauninstall.dll file, so I deleted that, rebooted and tried again. Sadly Installwizard crashed again.

Is the directory or its parent locked?
