Robert Scoble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Scoble) just posted a qik video about TinEye, which is a cool new (beta) image search system for the web. It's cool. Check it out here: http://qik.com/video/125205
The idea is this:
TinEye does for images what Google does for text.
Just as you are familiar with entering text in Google to find web pages that contain that text, using TinEye, you enter an image to find pages where that particular image (and modified versions of it) appears.
How does TinEye work?
TinEye uses sophisticated pattern recognition algorithms to find your image on the web without the use of metadata or watermarks.
TinEye instantly analyzes your query image to create a compact digital signature or ‘fingerprint’ for it. TinEye searches for your image on the web by comparing its fingerprint to the fingerprint of every single other image in the TinEye search index.

Don't know how long it'll keep working, but it does now.

Hah, it uses fingerprinting, of course. Images must seem trivial to factor in compared to audio.
Would be good to get better cover art than what you have.
The comparison to google works to a certain level only, if im looking for xyz i just type it out but i can't say im looking for a pic of xyz yet, you can to a certain point but its not as good as text.

Did you try it? Not the same as a "hash" fingerprint, as it finds not just identical images but other versions of the same image. Interesting, for sure. I think the long-term goal is to expand it to allow you to do "similar image" types of searches.
Is it "all the way there" yet? Certainly not. Neat stuff though.

No, but then i went and did it, course it allows you to paste URLs to images so found a cpl of interesting pics.
All of a sudden more things that i did not think of become possible ;D
searched over 702 million images in 1.121 seconds :o

Cover art searches was one thing that sprang immediately to my mind as well.

Now that is one useful little tool :)
All it really needs now is a Firefox plugin for right-click and it'd be near perfect.

Oops, missed that!
Having said that though, their database isn't quite there yet for the more out of the ordinary things. (Much older book covers/ film posters)
I've submitted both ImpAwards & Fantastic Fiction for crawling, will see if anything happens on that front :)

Results don't seem to be sortable by size which would help for cover art.
