I've just downloaded Media Center 12 this week because it's the only software I can find that allows for quick and easy crossfades between tracks. When I go to test burns, however, I get the "Can't start write" error. I tried fiddling with the settings and found that if I uncheck "apply cross-fade & DSP settings," the test goes fine.
Currently, I have CD-Text disabled.
I was also wondering if maybe using crossfades precludes you from writing directly to disk without an intermediate temp file. I unchecked "Decode files directly to disk" and then instead of "Can't start write" error dialog box, I get "couldn't start audio recording session" in the burn pane. I don't know if that helps or not, but I just wanted to mention it.

Make sure you don't have the DSP set to upsample to multichannel (like for 5.1 speakers and whatnot). That'll cause the burn to fail with esoteric error messages.
You can certainly do crossfades with direct-to-cd burns. I do these (and gapless) all the time.

I've been on a mix-burning hiatus so I can't comment, but I'll be doing some burns this weekend. Hopefully, it's not broken.
I see you have .479 installed. Try installing the newest Mc version (.520) in the thread at the top of this board.
