It's always a good idea to back up your library before making big changes, but MC13 will co-exist peacefully with MC12 and even with MC11.1.201.
If MC13 finds an MC12 library, it can import it.
MC12 and MC13 libraries are a different format, so servers from one won't work with the other.
Both programs could import and use the same files, but not at the same time.

I have lots of customizations on views that I would like to keep... will it be imported into MC13?
-
Good question. I installed and it got my library with ratings, playlists etc, what about podcasts? Any way to import them all?
-
Search in Explorer for podcast.xml. Mine is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12\Library
But it could be elsewhere. Location is set in options for Podcasts.
-
I'll find it, but what do I do then? Just run Import?
-
You can try moving it to the new location. You can set that location in the options.

Installed with 12.1 - 3 questions
1 - backup playlists in 13 - where are they? will the following work for 13 by changing 12 to 13?
To backup playlists
MC12.exe /MCC 20004, 0
and 20011 to force library backup
Will the above work by changing 12 to 13.
2 - can I uninstall 12.1 and 13 continue to function?
3 - Every time I update 12.1 do I need to update 13 as long as I continue to run both?
-
1. When you install MC13, it can find and convert an MC12 library. It can also restore an MC12 library.
2. Yes.
3. No.
