Does MC13 make a copy of the MC12 thumbnail cache, or does it rebuild from scratch?
If the latter, can I overide by copying my MC12 thumbnail cache to the MC13 cache location?
Would very much like to avoid rebuilding all thumbnails.

I believe it builds from scratch and that copying it is not a good idea, probably wouldn't work.
-
Rats. This will take a very long time on my system. I will probably try to copy the cache first and will report back here if it works.

If you haven't already done so, please start a thread on the MC12 board with some details (number of files, time). It's possible that configuration might matter. Network drive or virus checker, for example.
I am not suggesting there is anything wrong with MC. I just have a lot of files, many of which are video, and therefore a complete rebuild will take a long time. I have not done it for years but I would guess 24+ hours.
-
How many files? Are they on a local drive? Have you told your virus checker to skip them?
-
Like I said, have not done a thumbnail rebuild for years but I remember it takes a very long time.
I have about 190,000 files. All are on local drives. All are excluded from my virus checker.

190,000 files?, crap i have about 20,000 and thought it was a bit much, lol.
190,000 / 14 (songs per album) = 17,000 albums, hmmm.
TC ;D

Who says they're all music?

rjm,
I am not recommending the following procedure, but I think you may be able to keep your old thumbnails.
Here's what I did: First I restored an MC12 library backup file in MC13 and checked that it opened correctly. I disabled the Auto-import feature and file tagging and closed MC13.
Then I deleted the MC13 libary files & the corresponding thumbnail files and copied the similar MC12 files (from the same library that I restored) to the MC13 locations. Naturally both MC versions were closed during this.
After opening MC13 everything seemed to be fine and all thumbnails were instantly available. I have runned this test library a few hours and I have not encountered any problems with the features that I have used so far, but I am not promising that there would not be any problems. I haven't tested many of the advanced features like file stacks.
Personally, I wouldn't first try this with a library of 190,000 files. I am now testing it with a moderately sized local library. It has about 5,000 files, mostly audio, but also some videos, images and docs.

Thank you Alex. I was planning to try exactly what you suggested. It has worked for me in the past when upgrading. And I suspect it will work again this time unless the database structure changed dramatically, which I don't think is the case given the release notes.
I'll report back here my experience when done.
