What do you use to efficiently find lyrics now that Datamaster has been retired?
-
I haven't found anything automatic yet, so I hope you get some good replies.
I use Doof's Lyrics Editor plugin, which simplifies things a lot but doesn't go out and fetch the lyrics for you automatically.
There is a plugin for WMP called simply "Lyrics" which displays lyrics in the Now Playing screen but it does not save them to the file tags. So for quick fill-ins, I will export my "needs lyrics" playlist from MC, and open it in WMP. With WMP muted, I will skip through the playlist, grabbing the lyrics and pasting them into lyrics editor in MC. This is slightly faster than using Lyrics Editor to search because I don't have to wait for a search result page, pick a link to click, get hit with ads/pop-ups/etc. It goes pretty quick because the lyrics screen in WMP is formatted so that a triple-click selects all the text, then you can just right-click copy, switch to Lyrics Editor and right-click paste.
Whatever I can't find with that method I fill in with Lyrics Editor.

this is a new program I have not tried it however

I've installed a program named Tag Runner. It can be used for basic tags, cover art and / or lyrics. I use it only with the "lyrics" option activated (Don't want it to mess with my other tags).
It's not freeware, but there is a trial period and then a small fee.
The main advantage is that it finds lyrics for many songs, even very new ones. The main disadvantage is that it does not have an MC plugin to work with so you have to manage your files outside MC.
This is what I did... I spent a couple of weeks passing all my 338,000 songs through the program, in small batches. Then, I performed an autoupdate in MC for external changes.
Now, before importing new songs into MC I run Tag Runner on them to find the lyrics, and then import the songs into MC (with the lyrics already inserted).
Every month or so, I let again run all the songs imported in the last weeks through Tag Runner to let it find some more lyrics (mainly of those songs that were too recent when they were imported for the first time).
I plan to run a whole library pass through Tag Runner once a year or so.
Almost 150,000 songs with lyrics in my library now (out of a total of 338,000 including instrumentals). I'd say that 70 or 80,000 have been filled with TagRunner... lyrics not available in Datamaster or Evyl Lyrics, that were the tools I used before.
Not the perfect solution but works for me until something better comes up.
[EDIT] In case you try it, I suggest to disable the "SeekLyrics" source... it was giving bad results and I'm not sure whether it has been already fixed or not. The program updates sources on a weekly basis.

I'm did some testing with iLyrics based on craft's post. This appears to work OK. I have to have iTunes installed anyway because I have an iPhone. It is finding lyrics that were not found with Datamaster, so I'm filling in some of my missing lyrics. Maybe it's my lack of knowledge of iTunes, but I cannot figure out how to see missing lyrics in iTunes. I would like to have a Smart Playlist but I don't see a tag for lyrics. I'm now reviewing the first update from iLyrics using Lyrics Editor.
EDIT: Many of the lyrics iLyrics found had no line breaks - I tried fixing them but it was too much work so I deleted any lyrics without the line break.
Next I will try Tag Runner based on Deivit's post.

Unfortunately this program doesn't support flac files :(
seeklyrics is no longer listed as a source in the initial installation.
of course itunes/ilyrics doesn't support flac either, so I guess I'm still out in the cold.

I've installed a program named Tag Runner.
Do you have lots of "false positive" with that piece of software?
-
I tried iLyrics and Tag Runner. Both worked pretty well.
iLyrics is free, but it requires iTunes.
Tag Runner found more lyrics than iLyrics, but it is not free.
Tag Runner does not require iTunes.

Sorry, what do you mean with "false positive"? Wrong lyrics? Yes, ocasionally... although I would not say "lots of".

I use minilyrics. It works within a lot of media players but it's not for free.
Evillyrics works also but i prefer minilyrics because it finds nearly lyrics for all mp3.
-
Tagrunner is pretty good. I am now down to only 1206 songs without lyrics out of about 16,000 songs.

Almost the same as you. I'm down to 980 without lyrics out of 15,780.

I bet you have mainly songs in English?

Yes...

It would be nice to be able to perform a "send to -> External -> TagRunner" with the selected files. I've tried it to no avail. Any ideas?

I just drag & drop from MC into the Tagrunner window... works great. Of course, Tagrunner must be launched first. Then after Tagrunner does its thing, the files are still highlighted in MC so I can right click to update Library from tags.
It would be nice if you could add your own custom sources to TagRunner. Or maybe you can, I haven't explored it that deeply yet.

Oh, that seems very easy... As usual, I was trying to complicate an easy thing ::)
Thanks for the hint.

I tried it, but you have to review the lyrics one at a time as they play. It's similar to Evil Lyrics except it does not flood you with advertising and pop ups. I prefer tools that search for a batch in the background and automatically download.

Any other suggestions?

Tagrunner doesn't handle .ape (typical of course) ... so dragging the files from MC onto Tagrunner's screen only works with .mp3s, or does this somehow work with .ape files since they use ID3 tags (right?) ...
-
Tag Runner doesn't work with .ape or .flac....too bad, we need something in house from JRiver on this front.
Can some of you try MP3tag. It works for .ape files but the demo will cut off the lyrics. I'm also seeing some extra crud being pulled into the beginning of the lyrics however.

I just looked up some Allen Toussaint lyrics online and found some gracenote stuff on CMT. MP3tag just tried to pull it in and can't because of html code protections. It's garbled.
