Title: Reboot - a lot
Post by: Jolo on July 25, 2002, 12:51:55 pm
I was wondering if others have this problem. It appears to me that MJ is so feature rich, that it seems to take a lot of computer resources to run, and therefore my PC freezes a lot and creates situation where I have to reboot many times.

Many times while inside MJ, if I switch a lot to a lot of screens or functions, I get errors, and MJ failures then have to reboot to get MJ to work again.

On the mini-me part for listening to music (which is sooo cool), it still seems like the entire product is still loaded and it still takes a great amount of system resources to run.

Anyone else have problems with MJ causing errors, freezing and causing to reboot a lot ?

I'm running a 800mh AMD processor with 384mb and a fast 65mb disk drive. Using Win ME as my OS.

Product is GREAT, except for this.

I have the same problems; however, I think this is a WinME problem more than an MJ problem (I've posted about this previously).

My system resources dwindle steeply the longer I'm working, and MJ does tend to run thru resources quickly; but so does MS Works, and especially Quicken.

Check your system resources periodically when you're not using MJ and see if they drop. I think WinME does a horrible job of releasing memory when it's no longer being used.

I'm at work, so I can't paste in system info, but I'm running a Dell 8100 with WinME, P4 1.7, 256 mgs of ram, 40 gig HD with plenty of swap file space.

We had some people with similar problems on Win98 a while ago.  They were able to improve their situations by using software called rambooster.  You might take a look at download.com.

You could also try a search at google for "Win[insert your favorite here] memory problems" or similar.

I have ram booster and use it all the time, especially before going into Media Juke box.

I get Kernal errors a lot, freezing a lot, can't do many functions in it before it just drains all of the resources.

Usually the only thing that works is a reboot. Very irritating.

Could you post your system info here?  Do "Copy System Info" in MJ under Help and paste it here with a control v.

ME is no angel and may well be a contributor to these symptoms, but I don't think it is the sole culprit.

I run MJ on an ME machine (with rambooster) 24/7 and have gone weeks with only voluntary reboots.  (I like to reboot once a day just for practice)

And while you're all still numb with disbelief I'll add this - I installed ME with an upgrade disc to Win98!

Unfortunately, I don't know what my secret is.

Windows ME:
I used to use ME myself and throw it off the machine only a couple of days after install, because I couldn't open more than a few IExplorers or other software, that consumes much Resources. So I guess the problem is ME.

For what it is worth, I am running win98, and MJ gives me no problems.
One thing is for sure, MJ is not the kind of program to be using while a person has other large programs running in the background such as virus scanners and the like. On Win98 with 256 meg of ram and a 1.4 gig processor, it's pretty solid, especially the latest builds. My best advice to those that haven't already done it, is to type MSCONFIG at the run prompt, go to the startup tab, and see what all is running in the background.
