I'm suffering multiple crashes per day with the current build, and I've only noticed it with the current build. It's been happening at what seems any time, regardless of whether I'm even using MC, but I have finally started noticing a pattern... when I interact with the XP task bar to switch tasks MC will crash... not always, but it's starting to feel like that's the trigger...
Log contains nothing more useful than:
1672515: 1756: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
1672547: 1756: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 275, wParam: 4, lParam: 0, Window class: Afx:8230000:808:10011:0:0
or:

0717219: 3572: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 275, wParam: 1, lParam: 0, Window class: JRiver Display Container Window
Also getting random crashes when analyzing tracks or converting tracks to ipod with 4 concurrent processes. Sometimes crashes. Sometimes doesn't. Perhaps related, perhaps not.
Nothing is repeatable so far.
WinXP Pro Service Pack 3
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU
2 GB ram
Auto-import disabled
Plugins:
Defaults (only LastFM in use)
Playing Now 1.3.0.7
Visualization:
Track Info -> My Own View
File types: FLAC
Eep.

Turn off both LastFM and Visualizations.
Hardware may be an issue. Bad memory or CPU, for example.
Are the tracks you're playing on a local drive?

Turn off both LastFM and Visualizations.
OK will do...

Very sceptical about that. No issues with any other software, including things like Photoshop CS4 which use as much CPU and memory as they can.
Are the tracks you're playing on a local drive?
No. All tracks coming from a NAS via mapped network drive path. Been running MC for years this way.

Turned OFF LastFM and switched to Cover Art
Rattled about on the task bar and after 40 seconds or so:

Try playing a local library of tracks.
Hardware is a possibility. Other programs working doesn't rule it out.

Could you try playing APE or MP3, as a test? Since handheld conversion also crashes, it makes me wonder if in_FLAC.dll is crashing.
Does the Windows crash report list a module that is crashing?
Thanks, and sorry for the troubles.

OK! Doing that next...

It's a possibility, but last time we went down this route I took my PC offline, soak tested it for 24 hours with CPU/memtests etc and by the time I was back online a new MC was released and the fix was in :D

Matt, nothing in the event viewer. I'll try local files and non-FLACs.

We're not ruling that out either.

mp3 file playing locally...
Rattled about the task bar for 50secs or so.

Think hard. Is there anything else running? DSP? Other apps?

So you are just switching applications?
What view is visible? Does changing views, closing Action Windows, DSP Studio, etc. make any difference?
Thanks.

MC Audio:
Output mode: direct sound
DSP equaliser and volume levelling are active
Lots of background software running, but has always been there without causing issues. And of course Firefox and Thunderbird are open while I deal with this.

So you are just switching applications?
Yes, just flying around the task bar selecting any of the open folders, applications etc (Firerox, Thunderbird, MC itself, the Playing Now plugin, Windows Live Messenger)...

View is Playing Now. Will experiment with other views, DSP etc and report back.

Close all other apps. Keep simplifying.
There was a problem a while back with a plug-in for Firefox. I don't remember what it was. I think Marko posted about it. Something-tunes?
-
It was Foxytunes (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=45459.0).

DSP switched off. View was CD Baby webpage. Firefox/Thunderbird shutdown so no interaction from plugins (and I don't use FoxyTunes). Playback local mp3.
Only things on taskbar, MC, Playing Now, Windows Live
Rattled frantically around the task bar and for 30secs or so...

Uninstalled the Playing Now plugin... haven't crashed yet... will keep trying but mouse finger getting cramp :D
Mark

Uninstalled the Playing Now plugin...
Is it set to upload to an FTP server? Is the FTP server live?
Is it the Playing Now plug-in that ships with MC?
-
Still no crashes.
The Playing Now plugin must be the culprit... which is a shame as I love that plugin...
I'll keep hammering MC but for now I think we've found the solution.
Cheers,
Mark
-
Jim,
It's RhinoBanga's Playing Now plugin from the Interface Plug-Ins page and latterly from his website.
Mark
-
Is the server live?
-
Is the server live?
No idea. I've never used it as far as I am aware.
Gets stranger. I have now re-added Playing Now and things seem stable. The plugin was picked up automatically when I upgraded to MC13, I assume from my MC12 install?
Mark
-
Is it the Playing Now plug-in that ships with MC?
Ehhh... There is a playing-now-plugin shipping with MC?! I've tried "WritePlaying", but disabled it for testing MC13. Is there a "standard-playing-now"-plugin, and if there is, where can i find it? I couldn't find anything in MC's config.
-
Confusion with last.fm.
-
Just crashed again when using the task bar:
2133953: 5916: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
2133953: 5916: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 275, wParam: 1, lParam: 0, Window class: ATL:074AE6A8
First time in many hours playing since yesterday.
Have now uninstalled Playing Now and will monitor.
Mark
-
Well, I've now removed the Playing Now plugin completely and no task bar crashes since.

There is a confirmed bug with MC 13 and the playingnow plugin that causes MC 13 to crash when the playingnow popup produces a tooltip.
It happens after making certain changes to the library, such as adding a new keyword, but may also be caused by other library actions. After finding a way to reproduce the crash at will, I stopped hunting.
It took me many many months to pinpoint the cause of the crash and at this time, it has not been fixed. The temporary work-around is to not use popups that use tooltips, or to disable tooltips in popups that use them.
I sincerely hope that this will be fixed at some point in the near future, because, as you say, it's a great plugin that adds real function to the overall MC experience, and without tooltip info, it's really badly crippled.
