Title: M4A Audio and Visualization not working together.
Post by: Puffkin123 on February 05, 2009, 07:33:46 am
I have G-Force Visualization installed with Media Center 13 but it doesn't give me options to use my visualizations with m4a audio. I don't remember ever having this problem in MC12, but I could be wrong.. Could anybody assist me with this problem, thanks.

Take a look at using DirectShow:

I have CCCP codec pack installed, In the Directshow playback options I select m4a on the right side and press Select Filters, I look for DirectShow Filters on the Source Filters and Other Filters, but cant seem to find it in either of the lists. Does it have a different filter name in 1 of these lists or am I doing something wrong?

MC13 has a new option called "File Types".  Tools -> Options -> File Types.

Click "AAC Audio (m4a, aac)" under Audio, and select "JRiver Audio engine (using DirectShow)" from the "Playback Method" drop-down list near the bottom.

Alright, i've done that.. but it still doesn't show my G-force visualizations or any others. I right click on the display box on the bottom left but doesn't give me any options for visuals.

Are they lossless M4A files encoded with the Apple Lossless Codec?  Unless you have a directshow filter that can handle those installed, CCCP can't render them itself (so it fails back to Quicktime).

If MC needs to use Quicktime to render the files, then you don't get visualizations.

The DC-Bass Source filter can decode all kinds of m4a files, including ALAC. The files need to be tagged in "Apple's style", but if the files happen to be encoded with the old version of dBpa codec the tags can converted. Here's more info: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=47737.msg327262#msg327262 (and in that thread).

There appears to be some problems.  Visualization option is missing when playing audio in DirectShow engine.  We are investigating.
