Title: using an expression on a list type field?

im trying to get rid of some nesting in list type fields.
it looks like
mensen\gab
mensen\elly
etc

to get rid of the first part i thought i could use the replace expression. but i can not find a way to use it with inplace editing like i do with normal fields. was there an other way?
