Title: MJ12 using CPU without any activity

Lately I have noticed that MJ12 hogs up 60-70% CPU (I have 2.4 GHZ intel P4) without any activity.
I am not even playing anything or doing anything. I would assume that it
would just idle.

Could be thumbnailing, audio analysis, etc.  You can turn these off in settings.

Could be a plug-in or other third party software.

Maybe a virus checker.
