Title: Does anything else compare to MC13?
Post by: chriswale on March 26, 2009, 06:31:50 pm
Hi,
I have been using MJ and MC for sometime now and I'm hooked.
But I was wondering, does any other software compare to MC? is there something similar?

Is this a rhetorical question?  ;D

Seriously though, I don't think anything comes close to MC. People rave about XBMC or MediaPortal or even XP MCE or VMC.

Whilst these are all good FRONT ends, none of them offer the Backend organisational structure that MC offers or the ability to customise the front end to dsiplay those organisational structures.

On top of this, nothing I have found does as many things as well as MC. Some are good at one or 2 things, some at others. MC is as good, if not better than these in ALL areas.

With the recent enhancements to Theater View and the (hopefully) enhancements to displaying DVD data in Theater View, it's almost the perfect package.

I think the biggest selling point for Media Center is easily the frequency of updates!  When I tell people about it, I generally say a new version is released every week day and a build is made public every week or two.  The change list is also surprisingly long for each new build--it usually has a juicy item or two--for each and every user who may download it.

Addition: I forgot to answer the question in this thread.

No.

I will say YES! Lots of programs compare to MC13.

Badly.

What led you to try out MC ?

What did you use before.

I was originally looking to organize only my music.
I compared MJ12 to many applications.

One of the features that I liked was the ability to scan your songs and detect sync errors, scratches, silent patches, etc...

The difficult bit here is the amount of different kinds of media available.

The workaround however is better, instead of a one size fits all, go best of breed.

eg. sync errors for mp3 files can be detected with mp3utiliy (http://www.geocities.com/MP3utility/).

One way to use it within MC is to configure the Sent To->Send To (external) so that it calls mp3utility. You can configure any number of specific external tools depending on the job.

But even simpler is just let mp3utility run on its own, point it to your music directory and let it search. Do take a look at the options page for this program to set it to not move any bad files and to enable recursive searching. Try with a few before you do everything, it can take a while to do if your collection is large.

To find scratches would need another tool but i'm not aware of any offhand.

Silence detection can be enabled in MC during playback so it skips it.
Options->Playback->Audio->Do nor play silence (leading & trailing)(check)

Yes, but I want to see a list of the songs with silence in them so that I can fix the songs.
