Have a look at the screen shot from my library below... this is a combined view of Images & Videos.
Can you tell which of thumbnails are images and which are videos?? not at all.

Feature request: Please add a small icon to each thumbnail to identify which are photos and which are videos.
Obviously you would still have to work out the best icon image and exactly where it would be placed, below is just an example:
Perhaps the icons could only show if there were mixed media types. That would be a good solution!

Yes, I know that I could add text under the thumbnail: [media type]. but I like to have the [name] there, and it clutters the workspace.

I like the idea! Elegant and could be as simple as a checkbox to add media type icon.
In the meantime, you can define what text is shown under the thumbnails so you could display [Media Type]...so that might help you for now.

Why not just use highlighting? Oops. We forgot to specify how thumbnails would be highlighted. ;)
