I'm having a problem associating streaming audio from my favorite FM stations with MC.
The stations are KXJZ and KXPR, Sacramento, CA.
When I try to access these stations through Web Media (Public Radio Fan.com), MC "works" for a brief period and then I get a message to install RealPlayer.
When I try to access these stations through Audio > Google, the appropriate webpage opens in MC. I then copy the "play now" URL into a playlist I put together for streaming audio. When I choose that URL and click the MC play button, the audio stream opens in a Flash Player that appears to be a Plug-in to Windows Explorer.
I've set every audio and video file association in this PC to MC.
What is necessary to get these audio streams to associate with MC?

Let me ask this question another way.
Which streaming audio formats are not supported by MC?

There is a list of supported formats here:

It may be the Real Player trying to update itself. There are some DirectShow filters for playing Real formats. Try searching for Real Alternative.
Also check MC's settings for Real in Options/File Types.

Try adding Reciva to your Web Media websites, then using that to find the stations.

It found KXPR for me and seemed to find a non real stream. I don't have any real codecs installed and it's playing fine.
MC does normally play Real stuff fine however.

Reciva did the job - found KXPR and the file associated with MC without a hitch.
Why MC would not associate when the KXPR stream was accessed using those other modes, I'll probably never know.
But it does work; and happiness abounds - for the time being anyway.

I have the same problem, when trying to play streaming Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format. I have a message:
"Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location."
At the same time, Windows Media Player 11 playing this streaming tracks... What the problem?

This may be of no help but, the error message you reference follows ISP "holidays." That is, my ISP takes a 2 to 4 minute vacation every now and again - no apparent reason. If MC is playing streaming audio when this happens, the error message appears.
