Title: Library server as a service?
Post by: YannisA on June 11, 2009, 11:06:56 am
It's obvious that when Windows restart during the night after an Automatic update, Library server is not run.
Is it possible to have the option to use Library server as a service loaded upon startup?

take a look at options>startup>windows startup>media server. i guess that that is what you are looking for.

Gappie,  I don't think that's quite good enough.  It works after you log onto the machine, but not at startup when it's at the ctrl-alt-del to login message

Agree, this really should run as a service.

Also a reminder that in Vista & Server 2008, services cannot interact with the desktop, so it will have to be completely void of any prompts or tray icon when running as a service.

Any chance this might happen?

We don't plan to make a change anytime soon.

People have reported successes using a utility to start Media Server as a service.  I've forgotten the name.

Thanks for the reply.

I had tried that utility previously without success, so that's why I asked.  :'(

FWIW, if MC ran as a service it would actually be one of the better Windows Home Server add-ons and tap into that growing market.

Can you please identify what is the program or dll, that should run as a service on computer's startup (to give it the library server functionality), just to give it a try?

I have previously had luck with using Firedaemon Pro in order to run Library Server as a service.

It's Media Server that should be run, not Library Server.

Media Server will start Library Server when needed.

Please see our wiki entry on servers (http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Servers) for more information.

Oh yes. Sorry, I did actually mean Media Server. Firedaemon Pro worked with MC12, but I have used it with MC14.
