You can run the import manually by picking Import and going through the auto-import wizard.  This allows you to force a run and see progress.

Once the initial import is done, changes on disk should be picked up by the program in a couple minutes.

I run auto import on files dropped into my music directories.  I can't recall if there was ever an exception, but it is almost never more than than one minute for me.  I have occasionally run a manual import when I can't stand that kind of delay.
