Title: you tube and Theater View
Post by: gappie on June 19, 2009, 03:24:17 pm
tonight i showed the new you tube in Theater View to my wife. she loves you guys...
played around with it before and then and there are some things i noticed.

when you are doing a search and switch zones after that, the seach is gone and the search screen pops up. this is in contrast to other behaviour in Theater View. after doing a new search in that zone after hitting ok on the search, the videos po up with under that still the search screen that still has focus.

when you play a movie from you tube and send the mcc command for fullscreen, the image part of the video stops, but sound goes on, mc is not responding anymore. in the task manager it says mc is running happely but there is no way to get to it, also after the video is finnished, so it must be killed anyway. dont know if it is because it runs in a second zone.

apparently the search is done with quotes around it.. so we wanted to find something about the band - drive like maria - , i expected that - drive maria- would be enough, but gave no results, the full band name did. i know this is a choise to be made, but using a remote on the on screen keyboard makes lazy.

now some things that would be sweet. would there be a way to remember old searches? 8)
and.. well.. under the info panel of a record>you tube.. brings you to the tube page of that artist.. 8)

really a nice addition to Theater View. thanks

 :)

oh.. and when more details are necessary, ill be more then happy to provide them

A few other comments:

1) Since there is no option to toggle the view type, often times when I search for a video and get multiple entries with the same name except at the end of the name, I can't tell what is what because the names are truncated.

2) There are no native youtube player controls which means I can't skip a head or flip to HQ.

3) There needs to be a related videos section to whatever video you select.  This is my favorite feature in youtube, so this would be pretty limiting if it is not included.

Agree, fantastic feature. Also completely agree with all of the above. Searches seem a bit hit and miss (as gappie described).

PLUS...

...the one thing I really miss from http://www.youtube.com/xl is the ability to log in to see my favourite videos. I hope this can be included please?

Probably.  Same for Hulu.

What other sites should we add?

I'd like ABC.com.

Joost?

Audio sites are also possible:
Pandora
Last.fm

Anyone who is trying this -- you'll need to use MC 14.0.15 or above and you'll probably need to use the Obsidian skin in Theater View.

It would be great to have Playing Now and Playlists easily accessibly on the title bar when in YouTube. Adding YouTube videos to Playing Now and then saving them to playlists is a really powerful and excellent feature but it currently requires jumping in and out of way too many views.  Having these views easily accessible at the top of the screen would simplify the whole experience.

We had people over for the fourth and it really came in handy to have YouTube because someone can always blurt out some clip they want to show.

1. At the end of a YouTube video, MC freezes (.19, will try .25 soon)
2. Search should be much easier to access then all the way to the right.
3. Jumping across the sub nav takes a while because each jump requires MC to load the contents before you can continue.
4. Can you somehow interpolate through the magic of MC to give us 1080p video and HD audio from youtube?

 ::)

I feel the polish (Apple-esque) starting to really shine through.  Always love seeing new versions!

As described By others, YouTube is still hanging mc on stop for me and navigating the sub categories etc is so slow sometimes it's almost unusable. mc seems to be trying to load the video thumbnail etc at the same time.

I REALLY want to make use of this fantastic feature but the usability let's it down at the moment.

yeah right now i'm not really using it much.  i prefer the youtubexl version right now.

its basically because its too slow, no on screen player controls, it freezes, no related videos, the main categories arent all that usefull to me, the search doesnt seem to be that accurate, and it resets the audio playback display to cover art after playing.

im am also noticing the thumbnails for certain videos dont show up or just seem to get stuck.

Going between subcategories is very slow for me too.

Netflix in theater view would be genius.

I'd prefer it if the current YouTube function in Theater View was completed before more content is added. There's been other discussions on this but in summary, I've stopped using it due to the following issues:

- there's no buffering of the stream. For example, it's not possible to pause and buffer like you can with YouTube in a browser. Playback constantly stops and stutters with slower internet speeds. It's UNUSABLE in this current state.

- no player controls (like youTube xl)

- after searching and playing a video from the search results list, all results are cleared focrcing a re-search everytime

- the serach dialog can become unaccessible at times unless you exit and re-enter YouTube. Search should always be available.

- navigation of categories and stopping a video is still very slow

I can't comment on HULU. Perhaps some of this applies there also.
