Title: Mysterious MC14 UAC Prompt at Bootup
Post by: d_pert on September 28, 2009, 07:17:57 am
Hi,

Since 14.0.69, I’ve had a mysterious MC14 "thing" want approval by UAC during system start-up - but it's only happened three times out of multiple restarts. It's happened twice pre .71 and once with .71.  Note that this is happening long after initial installation, as in days later. There's no description given, I just approve and away we go. Otherwise MC works fine for me.

Any ideas?

On the first reboot after install, MC sometimes finishes an installation.  Shell extensions have been a cause of this in the past.  No need to be concerned.

No no no ;) this is happening randomly, DAYS after the fact, after many clean restarts, in no particular relation to installation.

I should add that it's not happening multiple times after any given installation ... it happens once, but like several restarts (maybe days) after the initial installation.

You can click the 'Details' button on the UAC prompt and see exactly what it's trying to run.

Please post it here.  My guess is that it's the setup completion, which works like Jim described.

APOLOGIES!

I just scoured through my logic again and realize that this perceived "delay" could be because I've restored my most recent system build Norton Ghost drive image a couple times, where I may have updated MC14, then let it run for a few days, never having restarted until then.

In fact that'll be it. SORRY GUYS.

However ... I have seen multiple iterations of MC (from 12 onward) where a restart after install should be prompted but isn't. As in my current case.

I realize it's not technically a problem, or likely to cause any problem. However from a customer perception standpoint, it's a bit disconcerting. A "click Okay to restart computer now or choose Later..." thing would be preferred.

It sort of leaves the question ... what else might they have missed?

Thanks.

Nothing.

We don't prompt for reboot if the shell extensions are the only component that couldn't be copied.  It's a technical Windows thing because there's no way to request a shell extension be unloaded by the system.

Okay - thanks. And thanks again for the best media player program all 'round by far!

(Although I still have to use SMPlayer for some Matroska x264 DTS/AC3 HD content).

I'm sure Yaobing would be interested in the details of what types of MKVs MC doesn't support that is forcing you to use SMPlayer in these cases.  I'm curious too...
